ArcGIS for Windows Phone overview
ArcGIS provides a great way to discover and use maps on your Windows Phone. The maps you use must first be authored, then you can consume them in the app. The application has the following two main areas:
- Map Hub—Where you connect to your geographic information system (GIS) and find maps.
- Map page—Where you view maps and work with their contents. If your map contains an editable layer, this is where you'll edit features.
Map Hub
The Map Hub is where you explore maps and manage your online GIS connections and mobile content servers. You can see and open recent maps, search for content, and switch your connection to another online GIS. See Find and open maps for more information. The following screen shot shows the Map Hub:
Tip:If you are connected to an online GIS other than ArcGIS Online (such as ArcGIS Online for organizations or Portal for ArcGIS), you'll see the name of that connection under the ArcGIS heading.

The following areas are highlighted in the previous image:
- Maps panel—Quick access to your favorite and recently viewed maps.
- Recent maps—Tap one of your four recent maps to reopen it. This area is pre-populated with some popular maps when you connect to an online GIS for the first time. See Open a recently viewed map for additional information.
- Favorites—Save maps as favorites to more easily return to them again later. See Open a favorite map for additional information.
- Account panel—Information about, and content belonging to, the signed-in user. If not signed in, tap account sign in. See Sign in to an online GIS for additional information.
- Signed-in user—Tap the user name to sign out of the app.
- User content—Access maps you created and groups of which you are a member. See Access your maps and Find and explore a group for additional information.
- Gallery panel—Access maps highlighted as part of your online GIS. See Browse map galleries for additional information.
- Search—Keyword search for maps and groups. See Search for maps and groups for additional information.
- Settings panel—Access connection and app settings. See Application settings for additional information.
- Connection management—Manage and switch your active online GIS connection. See Add a connection to an online GIS and Switch your online GIS connection for additional information.
- Mobile content server management—Manage and browse contents of mobile content servers. See Connect to a mobile content server, Manage mobile content server connections, and Open a map from a mobile content server for additional information.
- About—View information about the application, including its version number and the ability to reset the application back to the default settings.
Tip:If you're viewing a map, or have drilled into a series of pages, press the Back button on the device to close pages and the map and return to the Map Hub.
Caution:If you opened a map using a map tile pinned to Start, there is no Map Hub experience. Instead, there is only the map page. See Pin a map to Start for additional information.
Caution:If you opened an online GIS through a tile pinned to Start, you will have a slightly different Map Hub. There is no settings panel; instead there is an about panel. There is no map image in the background, but there is a title, including an icon or banner, as set up by the organization or portal to which you are connected. See Pin a connection to Start for additional information.
Map page
The map page is where you view the contents of a map. You can see feature information and areas of interest, as well as edit data. See Work with a map for more information. The following screen shot shows a map page with its app bar expanded to show the context menu available:
The following areas are highlighted in the previous image:
- Map title—Title of the map.
- Map—The map appears here, including the basemap and operational layers. You can navigate the map, exploring areas of interest and working with the features shown. See Navigate the map for additional information.
- Location/Identify information—Tap the map to drop a blue pin and show location information. Tap more to view additional information about any features with pop-up windows. See View feature information for additional information. For an editable feature, this starts the editing workflow. See Edit features for additional information.
- Features—Features display on the map.
- App bar—Use the app bar to access common functionality.
- Me icon—Shows your current location on the map. See Show your location for additional information.
- Search icon—Search for place names on the map. See Search for place names for additional information.
- Tools icon—Displays a menu of tools, including measuring, collecting features, and bookmarks. See Measure on the map, Add a new feature, and Use bookmarks for additional information.
- Map contents icon—View additional information about the map, including the layers, map details, legend, predefined queries, and bookmarks. See Change layer visibility, Change the basemap, View map details, View the legend, Run a predefined query, and Use bookmarks for additional information.
- Context menu—Use the context menu to access additional functionality.
- Search results menu item—Return to the results of your last place name search. See Search for place names for additional information.
- Clear map menu item—Tap to remove all pins and callouts.
- Pin to start menu item—Save the map to Start. See Pin a map to Start for additional information.
- Add to favorites menu item—Add the map to your list of favorites. If it's already in the list, this menu item will be remove from favorites. See Add a map to your favorites and Remove a map from your favorites for additional information.
Editing on the map page
If you've opened a map that contains editable layers, you can edit the features while you're on the map page. Depending on the operations supported by the editable layers, the app supports both adding a new feature and updating existing features. See Edit features for additional information.
