The ArcGIS Data Appliance consists of map resources that you can publish on your ArcGIS Server system. These include caches of pre-rendered map tiles, as well as the map documents that reference them. You need these resources in order to create fast-performing services.
The ArcGIS Data Appliance is delivered on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device that you can connect to your server. The recommended approach is to publish services directly against the data on the storage device. No copying of files is required.
