ArcIMS allows you to efficiently serve maps over the Internet. In order for the end user to have the best experience possible, you need to understand how ArcIMS works. Using ArcIMS covers the information you need to create a successful ArcIMS site.

The steps for creating a successful ArcIMS site are:

1 Create a map Create a map. Your first step is to a create map suitable for viewing in a Web application. You will want to optimize your map configuration file so it performs well.
2 Publish a map Publish a map. After you have created a map, you must publish it as a service.
3 Create a Web application Create a Web application. Once you have a service available, you can use it in a Web application.
4 Tune and monitor your site Tune and monitor your site. After you have created Web applications, you need to make sure your site continues to perform well and is secure.

You may be responsible for overseeing an entire ArcIMS site, or you may spend most of your time on one part of the process. Using ArcIMS has different sections for each step of the process of creating a successful Web site.

New user

If you are a new user, you need to understand the basic concepts behind creating an ArcIMS site. You should

Author maps

If you author maps, you need to understand how to create map configuration files in ArcIMS Author. You should

  • Review other books in the documentation that may be relevant: ArcXML Programmer's Reference Guide and Metadata Services.
Administer a site

If you administer a site, you need to know how to publish maps and how to keep a site running efficiently. You should

  • Read Publishing a map and Tuning and monitoring your site.
  • Review the ArcIMS administration checklist.
  • Be familiar with the sections "Securing your services and Web site", "Keeping your site running", "Using ArcIMS log files", and "Architecture".
  • Review other books in the documentation that may be relevant: Errors and warnings and the administrative components of the WMS Connector, WFS Connector, and Metadata Services.
Use out-of-the-box viewers

If you want to use the out-of-the box viewers, you need to know what options are available. You should

  • Read Create a Web application.
  • Understand how to install the ArcIMS Web Manager.
  • Be familiar with using the ArcIMS Web Manager and the Web Mapping Application.
  • Be familiar with the Help books "Designing an HTML, Java Custom, or Java Standard Viewer" and "Using the HTML, Java Custom, and Java Standard Viewers" if you plan to use any of these viewers.
Web developer

If you are a Web developer, you need to understand the different options available for developing applications. You should

  • Read Create a Web application.
  • Understand how to install the Application Developer Framework (ADF) for the Microsoft .NET Framework or the Java Platform.
  • Be familiar with the Developer Help for .NET or Java. On Windows, this help is accessible from Start | ArcGIS | Developer Help. On UNIX and Linux, run the start_arcgis_help script from the documentation directory.
  • Be familiar with the location of the customizing guides if you plan to use the ActiveX or ColdFusion Connectors or plan to customize the HTML or Java Custom Viewers.
