Installing Server Object Manager

The Server Object Manager (SOM) and Server Object Container (SOC) can be installed on the same machine or on different machines. In this installation scenario, the Server Object Manager will be installed on a separate machine to the Server Object Container. This topic only discusses installing the Server Object Manager. You will need to install at least one Server Object Container on another machine. The Server Object Manager runs on a single machine, and manages the set of objects that are distributed across one or more Server Container Machines.  See Installing Server Object Container for more information on installing Server Object Containers. To install the Server Object Manager and Server Object Container on the same machine, see Performing a typical installation.

The SOM feature includes Manager, the application for administering your GIS server, building Web mapping applications, and managing ArcGIS Explorer maps. Through it, you can publish maps, globes and other GIS resources, publish and manage ArcGIS Explorer maps, and create Web applications.

Installation Guidelines

How to prepare to install Server Object Manager

  1. Verify that your site meets the system requirements. For system requirement information see Step 1: Verify your system requirements.

  2. You are required to install ArcGIS Server as root, however you will be given an opportunity during the install process to assign the files to the SOM user. The user that you assign the files to must have full permissions to the ArcGIS Server installation directory. Group users and all others must have at least execute permissions to the ArcGIS Server installation directory.

  3. Insert the ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform media into the appropriate drive and browse to Setup to launch the setup program.

LINUX USERS: It is recommended that you install ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform to a mounted drive. If you do not install ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform to a mounted drive, some files will be left after uninstall.

Installation location:  The name of the installation directory should be in lowercase. The samples and data installed require the data path to be in lowercase.

How to install Server Object Manager

During the installation you will be asked to read the license agreement and accept it, or exit if you don't agree with the terms.

The ArcGIS Server install allows you to select between a Complete or a Custom installation type. The Custom installation type will allow you to select individual features for installation. Select to install the Server Object Manager. Uncheck all other features to not include them in the installation.

Features can be added at a later stage. To install other features see Installing ArcGIS Server overview. To install features at a later time see Adding additional installation components.

Installation location

You are required to provide the fully qualified domain name of the machine you are installing on. The fully qualified domain name must be in the form of <hostname>.<domainname>.

A user is required for setting file ownership, permissions and running processes. Provide the name an account. If the user does not already exist, the setup program will create a new user for you. It is recommended that you create this user account manually first. If you manually create the user account, the user must have at least 711 permissions to access the ArcGIS Server installation location. The user name should not be longer than 8 characters.

If the user account did not already exist, you will be prompted to provide a password in order for the setup to create the user account.

All files in the ArcGIS Server installation location will be owned by this user account.

The Server Object Container must be installed and configured before ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform is successfully set up. See Installing Server Object Container for information on installing Server Object Containers on other machines.
