Browse and open maps from the home screen
The home screen is one of the two main parts of ArcGIS Explorer Online, allowing you to browse and search ArcGIS Online from within Explorer Online. The home screen shows a list of featured maps that you can find out more about and open, and also provides starting points for creating new maps of your own. It also allows you to work with groups and content on ArcGIS Online. Some of the things you can do from the home screen are:
- Search for maps by keyword, and browse for maps.
- Sign in and browse and search your own content.
- View details about maps, groups, and services, and share your maps or services with other users in a group, or with all users.
- Open an existing map of your own, or a map created by another user.
- Create a new map by choosing from one of the list of basemaps, or by starting with an existing map, or by adding a specific map or image service.
- Create your own groups, or find and join existing groups.
The home screen has four main tabs that you can select in order to see different things:
- Featured shows you public maps from Esri and the wider ArcGIS community which the editors of the site have selected to show important, popular, and exciting information and cartography, for example new
basemaps from Esri, or public content created for current
events. You can view detailed information about the featured maps, and also open them. This tab will be shown by default if you are not signed in.
If you are signed in with an account that is associated with an organization in ArcGIS Online, you may see content in the Featured tab that is defined by your organization Administrator instead.
- My Content shows your own web maps and other content that you have saved to ArcGIS Online. You must be signed in to see your items in My Content. You can also edit the descriptive details of your items, and share them with
others. This tab will be shown by default if you are signed in.
Beneath the My Content tab, a second row of tabs allows you to see either Maps or Services content.
- Recent Maps shows you the most recent maps that you have been working with, and allows you to re-open these maps quickly.
- Groups shows you public groups available on ArcGIS Online, and also your own groups if you are signed in and you own any. You can also work with the
content in private groups of which you are a member.
If you are signed in with an account that is associated with an organization in ArcGIS Online, you may only see groups that are within your organization.
A fifth Search tab will be added when you perform a search. It will be removed when the search results are cleared. When you perform a search, a second row of tabs allows you to see either Maps, Services, or Groups search results.
If you are viewing a map, you can return to the home screen without losing any changes in your current map, by clicking the Home button at the left of the toolbar.
All of the maps that you can open and save with Explorer Online are stored in ArcGIS Online, so you must sign in to save a map.
