Another way to edit a vertex's z-values instead of using the Edit Sketch Properties window, is to interactively move the z-value. The Move, Rotate, and Scale 3D editing tools allow interactive dragging in the 3D view to complete the task. The vertex coordinates will automatically update to the new position.

The tables below compare how to use interactive tools versus the commands. Interactive edits mean you don't rely on any dialogs or menus. When the Edit Placement tool is combined with specific mouse button clicks (left, middle or right) and keyboard keys, you can invoke interactive tools for the 3D view. Commands are not interactive.

Use the Edit Placement tool to move selected features to the right, left, back, forward, up, or down. Interactive moves, can be a more efficient workflow to your editing tasks.

Move is supported for points, polygons, lines, and multipatches.

Method

Description

Using Move interactively :

(use shortcut keys and the pointer to drag the feature and update its position automatically.)

  1. Select the feature you want to move with the Edit Placement Edit Placement Tool tool.
  2. To initiate a move in x and y plane: Press and hold the left mouse button to interactively drag the selected feature.
  3. To initiate a move only in z: Press and hold the left mouse button and SHIFT key together, to interactively drag.

TipTip:
  • This is a useful way to edit a vertex's z-value quickly as an alternative to using the Edit Sketch Properties window.

Using the Move Command:

(use a dialog to manually enter x,y,z coordinates.)

  1. Select the feature you want to move with the Edit Placement Edit Placement Tool tool.
  2. Click 3D Editor > Move and enter the delta x, y, and z distances.
  3. Press ENTER.
TipTip:
  • Press the M key after selecting the feature to quickly access the Move dialog box instead of opening the 3D Editor menu.

The selected features are moved to their new 3D position.

Use the Rotate tool to rotate selected features around the x,y plane.

Rotate is supported for points, polygons, lines, and multipatches.

  1. Select the feature you want to rotate with the Edit Placement Edit Placement Tool tool.
  2. To initiate the Rotate tool, press and hold the middle mouse button to interactively rotate the selected features by dragging.
NoteNote:
  • For point features symbolized as 3D markers, you must assign rotation by attribute in the Symbology tab of the layer's properties in order for the Rotate tool to work.

Using the Rotate Command:

(use a dialog to manually enter an angle value.)

  1. Select the feature you want to rotate with the Edit Placement Edit Placement Tool tool.
  2. Click 3D Editor > Rotate and enter a rotation Angle in the Angle dialog box.
  3. Press ENTER.
TipTip:

Press the R key after selecting the feature to quickly access the Angle dialog box.

The selected features are rotated around the x,y plane.

Use the Scale tool to resize the selected features.

You can resize the geometry of polygons, lines, and multipatches and update symbol size of point features.

  1. Select the feature you want to resize with the Edit Placement Edit Placement Tool tool.
  2. To invoke the Scale tool, press and hold the right mouse button and the SHIFT key to interactively scale the features by dragging the pointer.
NoteNote:
  • For point features symbolized as 3D markers, the feature needs to use size by an attribute for the Scale tool to work.

Using the Scale Command:

(use a dialog to manually enter an scale factor.)

  1. Select the feature you want to resize with the Edit Placement Edit Placement Tool tool.
  2. Click 3D Editor > Scale and enter the scale factor.
  3. Press ENTER.

  • Press the C key after selecting the feature to quickly access the Scale dialog box.
