Glossary Item Box

SharePoint lists may have fields that reference a geographic location. Such lists can be displayed as layers in the Map Web Part.  To do so, you must first geographically enable the list. How this is done depends on the type of geographic information that is in the list.

Lists with coordinate data

Lists that contains columns which store the latitude and longitude for each list item can be spatially enabled by adding an ArcGIS Location Field to the list. Once this field is added, the list can be shown as a layer in a Map Web Part. For detailed instructions refer to Coordinate Lists.

Lists with address data

Lists that contain columns which store the address of each list item can be spatially enabled by using the ArcGIS Geocoding Workflow.  For detailed instructions refer to Geocoding addresses.

The ArcGIS Geocoding Workflow is not limited to spatially enabling lists that contain address data.  Rather, it can be used for any data for which an ArcGIS Server Locator Service can be created.  For instance, you could create a locator service to geocode I.P. addresses.
