Data migration to a new software release

When you migrate your ArcGIS Server for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances to a new release, you must also migrate your data to the new release.

For source data that is not in a geodatabase, such as shapefiles, the data will be moved to your new ArcGIS Server instance when you move your existing EBS volume and attach it to your new ArcGIS Server instance.

For geodatabase source data, the geodatabase must be moved to the new instance, and in most cases, the geodatabase must be upgraded. The following sections summarize how to migrate each type of geodatabase from one EC2 instance to another.

File geodatabases

If you are using file geodatabases to store your data in your ArcGIS Server EC2 instance, new functionality and fixes can be obtained by moving the file geodatabase to the new release ArcGIS Server EC2 instance and upgrading the geodatabase.

If your file geodatabases are stored on your data EBS volume, they will be moved to your new ArcGIS Server instance when you attach your existing volume to your new instance. If your database files are stored on the C drive of the ArcGIS Server instance, you must move them to the new instance using one of the methods described in Strategies for data transfer to Amazon.

Once your file geodatabases are moved to the new instance (or if you applied a service pack to your existing ArcGIS Server EC2 instance), check the upgrade status of the geodatabase and upgrade, if necessary.

See Moving a file geodatabase to a new ArcGIS Server instance for instructions.

Workgroup geodatabases

If you are using workgroup geodatabases to store your data and you migrate your existing ArcGIS Server instance to a newer release instance, you must do the following:

  1. Detach all geodatabases from the database server in your existing ArcGIS Server instance.
  2. Move your database files to the new ArcGIS Server instance.

If your database files are stored on your data EBS volume, they will be moved to your new ArcGIS Server instance when you attach your existing volume to your new instance. If your database files are stored on the C drive of the ArcGIS Server instance, you must move them to the new instance using one of the methods described in Strategies for data transfer to Amazon.

  3. Attach each of your geodatabases to the database server in your new ArcGIS Server instance.
  4. Upgrade each geodatabase, if necessary.

See Moving workgroup geodatabases to a new ArcGIS Server instance for more information.

If you apply a service pack to ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Desktop on an existing ArcGIS Server instance, you just need to check the upgrade status of the geodatabases and upgrade, if necessary. Follow steps 10 through 13 on Moving workgroup geodatabases to a new ArcGIS Server instance to accomplish this.

Enterprise geodatabases

Enterprise geodatabases are stored in separate Amazon EC2 instances called EGDB instances. You can either install the newer release or service pack on your existing EGDB instance and upgrade, or create a new EGDB instance, move your data, then upgrade. See Applying EGDB service packs and patches on Amazon EC2 or Moving existing data to a new EGDB instance for instructions.
