Moving workgroup geodatabases to a new ArcGIS Server instance

When you migrate your ArcGIS Server Workgroup on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances to a new release of the ArcGIS Server Amazon Machine Image (AMI), you also need to move your geodatabases to the new instance. You may also need to upgrade the geodatabases.

Steps:
  1. Make a remote desktop connection to your existing ArcGIS Server instance.
  2. Open ArcCatalog and connect to the database server in the Catalog tree.
  3. Be sure you know where your database files are stored on the server instance before you detach them. If you are not sure, you can look at the Administration tab of the Geodatabase Properties dialog box for each geodatabase to see where the files are stored.
  4. Right-click the first geodatabase on the database server, point to Administration, then click Detach.
  5. Repeat the previous step for each geodatabase on the database server.
  6. Proceed with the steps in Migrating your existing configuration to a newer ArcGIS Server AMI to launch a new ArcGIS Server instance and move your existing data volume to the new instance.
    NoteNote:

If your database files are not stored on your existing data volume—for example, they are stored on the C drive of your existing ArcGIS Server instance—you must move the database files to your new ArcGIS Server instance. See Strategies for data transfer to Amazon for ways to move files in Amazon EC2.

  7. Make a remote desktop connection to your new ArcGIS Server EC2 instance and open ArcCatalog.
  8. Add a database server connection.
    1. Expand the Database Servers node and double-click Add Database Server.
    2. Type localhost\sqlexpress in the Database Server text box and click OK.
  9. Add the ArcGIS Server SOC account to the database server.
  10. Attach your existing geodatabases to the database server in the new ArcGIS Server instance.
    1. Right-click the database server and click Attach.
    2. Type or browse to the location of the first database file then click OK to attach.
    3. Repeat the previous two substeps to attach all other geodatabases.
  11. Check the upgrade status of the geodatabases.
    1. Right-click the first geodatabase and click Properties.
    2. Click the General tab.
    3. If the Upgrade Status indicates an upgrade is not needed, you are finished migrating this workgroup geodatabase. Close the Geodatabase Properties dialog box for this geodatabase and proceed to step 13.
    4. If the Upgrade Status indicates the geodatabase can be upgraded, click Upgrade Geodatabase.

      The Upgrade Geodatabase tool opens.

  12. Leave both the Pre-requisites check and the Upgrade geodatabase options checked, then click OK to upgrade the geodatabase.
  13. When the tool successfully completes, click Close to close the geoprocessing tool progress dialog box.
  14. Repeat steps 9 through 12 for each geodatabase on the database server.
