Installing the Server Object Container

The server object manager and server object container can be installed on the same machine or on different machines. In this installation scenario, the server object container will be installed on a separate machine than the server object manager. You can install the server object container on many machines. This topic only discusses installing the Server Object Container feature. You will need to install the server object manager on another machine. The server object manager manages the set of server objects that are distributed across one or more server object container machines. See Installing the Server Object Manager for more information. To install the server object manager and server object container on the same machine, see Performing a typical installation.

How to prepare to install the Server Object Container

  1. Obtain an authorization file for the machine you will be installing the ArcGIS Server Object Container on.
  2. Verify that your site meets the system requirements. For system requirement information, see Step 1: Verify system requirements.
  3. Log in as a user with administrative privileges.
  4. Close all applications on your computer.
  5. Insert the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework media into the appropriate drive to automatically launch the setup program.

NoteNote:

ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework requires the following:

  • .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. The Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is available on the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework media.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or higher. You must obtain and install Internet Explorer 7 or higher prior to installing ArcGIS Server.

How to install the Server Object Container

  1. From the media front end, click the GIS Services setup link to launch the ArcGIS Server 10 for the Microsoft .NET Framework - GIS Services setup program.
  2. During the installation, read the license agreement and accept it, or exit if you don't agree with the terms.
  3. The ArcGIS Server installation allows you to select the features you want.
    soc only

On the Select Features dialog box, choose Server Object Container. Click the arrow to the left of the Server Object Container feature. From the list, choose Will be installed on local hard drive to install the server object container. Unselect all other features and choose Entire feature will be unavailable to exclude these features from installation.

The ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services installation consists of a collection of features and subfeatures. Features consisting of subfeatures will have a plus (+) or minus (-) sign to their left. The plus sign will expand the feature so that you can view its subfeatures. The minus sign will collapse the list of subfeatures. The Server Object Container feature contains one subfeature, Python. If Python 2.6.X and Numerical Python 1.3.0 are already installed on your machine, the Python feature will be available for installation, but Python 2.6.5 and Numerical Python 1.3.0 will not be reinstalled.

  4. To complete the installation, follow the directions on the screen.
  5. Complete the post installation setup

After the ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services installation completes, launch the post installation process by clicking Finish > OK. The following post installation options are required to successfully complete an ArcGIS Server Object Container installation:

    Configure GIS Server

    Authorize GIS Server

These post installation options will automatically be selected for you.

  6. After completing the post installation setup, you must complete the additional steps manually using the Windows operating system tools. See Additional configuration steps using operating system tools for more information.

The server object manager must also be installed and configured before ArcGIS Server is successfully set up. See Installing Server Object Manager for information on installing the server object manager on another machine.
