Performing a typical installation

In this installation scenario, all available installation features are installed on one machine. This includes Server Object Manager (SOM), Server Object Container (SOC), Python, Services Manager, and Web Services (SOAP, REST). These installation features are preselected in the setup program.

How to prepare to install ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services

  1. Obtain an authorization file for the machine on which you will be installing ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services.
  2. Verify that your site meets the system requirements. For system requirement information, see Step 1: Verify system requirements.
  3. Log in as a user with administrative privileges.
  4. Close all applications on your computer.
  5. Insert the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework media into the appropriate drive to automatically launch the media front end.

You are now ready to install ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services and, if necessary, ArcGIS Server 10 - Web Applications. Not sure if you need to install ArcGIS Server 10 - Web Applications? See Installing ArcGIS Server overview for more information.

NoteNote:

ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework requires the following:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is available on the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework media.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or higher. You must obtain and install Internet Explorer 7 or higher prior to installing ArcGIS Server.
  • The Services Manager (GIS Services), Web Services (GIS Services), and Applications Manager (Web Applications) features require Microsoft IIS.

ArcGIS Server authorization

The ArcGIS Server server object container requires an authorization file. Each machine installing this feature will require a valid authorization file. See To obtain an authorization file for more information.

If you installed the server object container, the post installation option Authorize ArcGIS Server will configure your machine using the authorization file you received from ESRI Customer Service.

How to install ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework

  1. From the media front end, click the GIS Services setup link to launch the ArcGIS Server 10 for the Microsoft .NET Framework - GIS Services setup program.
  2. During the installation, read the license agreement and accept it, or exit if you don't agree with the terms.
  3. The ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services setup program allows you to select the features you want.
    typical install

The ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services setup consists of a collection of features and subfeatures. An example of a feature is Server Object Container (SOC), which consists of one subfeature, Python. Features consisting of subfeatures have a plus (+) or minus (-) sign to their left. The plus sign expands the feature so that you can view its subfeatures. The minus sign collapses the list of subfeatures. To install other features, see Installing ArcGIS Server overview. To install features at a later time, see Adding additional installation components.

Python is a subfeature of the server object container. If Python 2.6.X and Numerical Python 1.3.0 are already installed on your machine, the Python feature will be available for installation, but Python 2.6.5 and Numerical Python 1.3.0 will not be reinstalled.

  4. If the Python feature is selected for installation and Python 2.6.X and Numerical Python 1.3.0 are not installed on your machine, you are provided the opportunity to choose the Python installation directory. The default installation location is C:\Python26\.
  5. Select a Web site for the ArcGIS Server instance. Available Web sites are listed as <Web site name (port)>.
    select web sites
    NoteNote:

If you don't see the Select a Web site dialog box, this means you only have one Web site. If only one Web site is found on your machine, the ArcGIS Server instance is automatically placed on that Web site without displaying the Select a Web site dialog box.

  6. Enter the name of the ArcGIS Server instance. The default value is ArcGIS.
    instance name
    NoteNote:

If ArcGIS Server 10 - Web Applications is installed, you are not given the option to configure the ArcGIS Server instance. Services Manager and Web Services are automatically installed to the same instance created by the ArcGIS Server 10 - Web Applications installation process.

  7. To complete the installation, follow the directions on the screen.
  8. Complete the post installation process.

After the ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services installation completes, launch the post installation process by clicking Finish > OK. The following GIS server post installation options are required to successfully complete a typical ArcGIS Server installation:

    Configure GIS Server

    Authorize GIS Server

These post installation options are automatically selected for you.

    NoteNote:

The Web Services Post Install is integrated with the GIS server Post Install, if launched at the end of the setup installation. If launched from the shortcuts, each post installation must be executed separately.

  9. After completing the post installation setup, you must complete the additional steps manually using the Windows operating system tools. See Additional configuration steps using operating system tools for more information.
