Step 1: Verify system requirements

The system specifications, including hardware requirements, supported operating systems, and Web servers, that are required to run ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework are available at ArcGIS Server 10 System Requirements.

Supported operating system

See ArcGIS Server 10 System Requirements for the latest supported operating systems.

The operating systems below satisfy the minimum operating system requirements:

NoteNote:
ArcGIS Server is not supported on domain controllers. Installing ArcGIS Server on a domain controller may adversely affect functionality.

The following disk space is required to install ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework (both ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services and ArcGIS Server 10 - Web Applications):

Disk space requirements

Complete installation

2000 MB

350 MB of this disk space will be required on your system drive.

Microsoft .NET Framework requirement

ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is available on the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework media. However, on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 must be installed using Windows Features. Follow the instructions below to install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2:

Windows 7:

Go to Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows Features on or off. Enable and install the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1

Windows Server 2008 R2:

Open Server Manager -> Features -> Add Features. Enable and install the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1

Microsoft SQL Server Native Client

Setup.exe will automatically install the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client. If you run setup.msi, you will need to install the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client separately from \support\SQlNative.

The Microsoft SQL Server Native Client is a single library containing the SQL OLE DB Provider and SQL ODBC driver. It is required to access new SQL Server 2005 and 2008 data types and features used by ArcGIS 10. Any ArcGIS client application making a Direct Connect connection to an ArcSDE geodatabase on SQL Server must have the SQL Server Native Client installed.

The new data types that are used by ArcGIS 10 are XML, Geometry and Geography, datetime2, and varbinary(max). Query Layer connections made to SQL Server must use the SQL Server Native Client library and the new ST_Raster type (this is an optional installation) is a User Defined Type (UDT), which also requires the SQL Server Native Client.

At ArcGIS 10, clients making Direct Connect connections to ArcSDE geodatabases are required to have client drivers at or greater than the release of the SQL Server database. Clients connecting to SQL Server 2005 must have the 2005 or 2008 Native Client. Clients connecting to SQL Server 2008 must have the 2008 Native Client. An error message is returned, and connections are prevented if the clients are using connectivity providers from an earlier release. The SQL Server Native Client is backward compatible—the 2008 Native Client can be used to connect to earlier releases of SQL Server.

Internet Explorer 7.0 or higher required

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7.0 or higher is required. You must obtain and install Internet Explorer version 7.0 or higher prior to installing ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework.

Support for 64-bit processors

ArcGIS Server 9.2 and higher is supported on the Intel and AMD 64-bit processor families. ArcGIS Server is a native 32-bit application. It is certified to run as a 32-bit application on 64-bit (x64) Microsoft Windows. See Using ArcGIS Server with a 64-bit processor for more information.

Microsoft Visual Studio

See Visual Studio Integration for more information.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Express Editions

See Visual Studio Integration for more information.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express Editions

See Visual Studio Integration for more information.

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)

The following features require Microsoft IIS:

NoteNote:

Certain IIS components are required when performing an installation on Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008/R2. If these components are not installed, the Web Applications feature will not be visible. For installations on Windows Vista and Windows 7, see Vista/Windows 7 IIS requirements for more information. For installations on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, see Windows Server 2008/R2 IIS requirements for more information.

ASP.NET 2.0

If you have Microsoft IIS installed, ASP.NET 2.0 must be installed with Microsoft IIS. Only the ArcGIS Server instance will be registered as an ASP.NET 2.0 application. Other applications can use different versions of ASP.NET side-by-side with the ArcGIS Server instance. For more details, see the information on the ASP.NET IIS Registration Tool (Aspnet_regiis.exe) at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;894435.

ASP.NET 2.0 needs to be installed with IIS so that you can work with Web applications and the Web ADF controls and classes, which have been designed to work with the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

ArcGIS Server geoprocessing requirements

Python 2.6.X and Numerical Python 1.3.0 are required to support certain core geoprocessing tools. It is recommended that Python 2.6.5 and Numerical Python 1.3.0 are installed by the ArcGIS Server setup. Users can choose to not install Python 2.6.5 and Numerical Python 1.3.0 by unselecting the Python feature during installation. The Python feature is a subfeature of server object container (SOC). If Python 2.6.5 and Numerical Python 1.3.0 are installed by an ArcGIS setup, the last ArcGIS product uninstalled will also uninstall Python 2.6.5 and Numerical Python 1.3.0. ArcGIS setups include ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Engine, and ArcGIS Desktop.

Additional Software and Development Requirements

An OpenGL 1.2 (or higher)-compliant video card is required, with at least 32 MB of video memory. However, 64 MB of video memory or higher is recommended.

Supported Web servers

To use Web ADF controls and classes, Microsoft IIS should be installed.

Interaction between ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework and ArcGIS products previous to 10

If the following products are installed on your machine and are a version previous to 10, they must be uninstalled before proceeding with the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework setup:

The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework setup will display a dialog box if conflicting versions of these products exist on your machine. If so, you must uninstall these products, then run the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework setup again to proceed with your installation.

These products, if they are all version 10, can exist together on the same machine.

ArcGIS Authorization file

Each ArcGIS SOC machine requires an authorization file. See To obtain an authorization file for more information. Each new version of ArcGIS SOC requires a new authorization file.
