Publishing image services using ArcGIS Server
ArcGIS 10 is the last release of the stand-alone ArcGIS Image Server product. The image service definition (.ISDef) has been replaced by an improved geodatabase data model—the mosaic dataset—which can be published as an image service using the ArcGIS Server Image extension.
You can use ArcGIS Server to publish image service definitions. There are several advantages to doing this:
- A service can be created that will support both raster and vector data.
- An image service, WMS service, and WCS service can be published to serve an image service from ArcGIS Image Server.
- WCS services can be used as input to geoprocessing tools.
- The service layers have more functionality and properties than when making a direct connection to the ArcGIS Image Server.
The installation requirements for ArcGIS Server
- Install ArcGIS Server.
- Install the ArcGIS Image Server server and service providers.
These can be installed on different machines.
- Edit the server configuration to provide the name of the ArcGIS server object manager (SOM) machine to which the server will be connected.
You can publish the image service definitions from the SOM or using ArcCatalog.
Registering ArcGIS Image Server with ArcGIS Server
You must register ArcGIS Image Server with ArcGIS Server to serve compiled image service definitions created with ArcGIS Image Server. To do this, you must first install, license, and set up both server applications.
To set up ArcGIS Server, you must run the post installation process along with other steps outlined in the Getting started after install ArcGIS Server help topics.
To set up ArcGIS Image Server, you must have the server, service provider, and Image Server Manager components installed. Using Image Server Manager, configure the server and service provider. Be sure to add the name or Internet Protocol (IP) address to the Image Server Manager allow list of the computer where the ArcGIS Server Manager is located. You can then close Image Server Manager.
You must make an administrative connection to ArcGIS Server using either ArcCatalog or ArcGIS Server Manager over the Internet. You can then type the server name and port for ArcGIS Image Server.
Failover protection steps
ArcGIS Server has the ability to restart itself if it goes down; however, ArcGIS Image Server is not automatically set up for this.
You can change this by opening your Windows Services control panel and changing the Startup Type property from Manual to Automatic, for the ESRIImageServer service, any ESRIImageServiceProvider services, and the ESRIImageServerReporter service.
