In ArcSDE, layers are an organizational concept for managing spatial data. The lowest level
of spatial information is the location and shape of features that are stored in
spatial tables. Geographic features that are thematically similar and
geographically continuous constitute a layer in ArcSDE. When you add a spatial
column to a table, you are creating a layer and specifying what types of
features are allowed in the layer. The purpose of layers is to manage the
spatial tables and their associated metadata.
