Installing the server object manager
The server object manager (SOM) and server object container (SOC) can be installed on the same machine or on different machines. In this installation scenario, the server object manager will be installed on a separate machine than the server object container. This topic only discusses installing the server object manager. You will need to install at least one server object container on another machine. The server object manager runs on a single machine and manages the set of objects that are distributed across one or more server object container machines. See Installing the server object container for more information. To install the server object manager and server object container on the same machine, see Performing a typical installation.
The SOM feature includes Manager, the application for administering your GIS server, building Web mapping applications, and managing ArcGIS Explorer maps. Through it, you can publish maps, globes, and other GIS resources; publish and manage ArcGIS Explorer maps; and create Web applications.
Installation guidelines
- ArcGIS Server cannot be installed to the same location as any other ArcGIS product.
- No other ArcGIS product can be installed as the ArcGIS Server user.
- If ArcGIS Server is installed on a machine, you will only be able to install another ArcGIS product in single user mode (not in multiuser mode).
How to prepare to install the server object manager
- Verify that your site meets the system requirements. For system requirement information, see Step 1: Verify system requirements.
- You are required to install ArcGIS Server as root; however, you are given an opportunity during the installation process to assign the files to the SOM user. The user that you assign the files to must have full permissions to the ArcGIS Server installation directory. Group users and all others must have at least execute permissions to the ArcGIS Server installation directory.
- Insert the ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform media into the
appropriate drive and browse to Setup to launch the setup program.
Linux users: It is recommended that you install ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform to a mounted drive. If you do not, some files will be left after uninstalling.
Installation location: The name of the installation directory should be in lowercase. The samples and data installed require the data path to be in lowercase.
How to install the server object manager
- The setup program begins by providing you with a list of
prerequisites that must be met to successfully set up and
use ArcGIS Server. Clicking Next on this Introduction dialog box allows the setup program to verify that your machine meets these
prerequisites.
During the installation, read the license agreement and accept it, or exit if you don't agree with the terms.
The ArcGIS Server installation allows you to select between a complete or a custom installation type. The custom installation type allows you to select individual features for installation. Choose to install the server object manager. Uncheck all other features to exclude them from the installation.
Features cannot be added at a later stage. To install other features at this time, see Installing ArcGIS Server overview.
- Specify the installation location.
Installation location
- The name of the installation directory should be in lowercase. The samples and data installed require the data path to be in lowercase.
- The installation directory cannot be the same as any other ArcGIS product.
- At least 711 permissions are required for all directories in the path where ArcGIS Server will be installed.
- Enter a fully qualified domain name.
You are required to provide the fully qualified domain name of the machine you are installing on. The fully qualified domain name must be in the form of <hostname>.<domainname>.
- Specify an account name.
A user is required for setting file ownership and permissions and running processes. Provide the name of an account. If the user does not already exist, the setup program creates a new user for you. It is recommended that you create this user account manually first. If you manually create the user account, the user must have at least 711 permissions to access the ArcGIS Server installation location. The user name should not be longer than eight characters.
If the user account does not already exist, you are prompted to provide a password for the setup to create the user account.
All files in the ArcGIS Server installation location are owned by this user account.
- To complete the installation, follow the directions on the screen.
- After the installation is complete, ArcGIS Server Manager is
automatically launched in Firefox. You are also able to
access Manager manually from any supported Web browser by
navigating to http://<SOM machine name>:8099. To access
Manager for the first time, log in with the user name admin and the
password admin. ArcGIS Server Manager is used to manage your ArcGIS
Server users. See the ArcGIS Server Manager documentation and help
for more information.
The server object container must be installed and configured before ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform is successfully set up. See Installing the server object container for information on installing server object containers on other machines.
