Organize maps into folders

Once you have signed in, you have access to your maps and supported content items in the My Content panel of the home screen. You may want to keep all your maps in your root folder (indicated by your ArcGIS Online account name) or you may want to organize your items into different folders based on their purpose, content, or accessibility (whether the maps are public or private).

Create a folder

In the home screen, click the My Content tab to open the My Content panel, then click the + button at the bottom of the folder list, supply a name for the folder in the New Folder dialog box, and click OK. The new folder will be added to the folder list and positioned alphabetically within it.

TipTip:

Folder names must be unique.

Delete a folder

In the home screen, click the My Content tab to open the My Content panel, select the folder you want to delete, then click the x button at the bottom of the folder list, and confirm that you actually want to delete the folder.

You cannot delete a folder if:

  • It is your root ArcGIS Online account folder. This folder has the same name as your ArcGIS Online username.
  • A map contained within it is currently open.
  • It contains any content that is not supported by ArcGIS Explorer Online, for example, a web application added to a folder using the ArcGIS Online website.

Move a map or service to another folder

In the home screen, click the My Content tab to open the My Content panel, then locate the item that you want to move. Beneath the summary details for the selected item, click the Move link, select the destination folder in the Move Folder dialog box, then click OK.

Alternatively, you can select the item, then drag and drop it into the folder that you want to move it into.
