Save a map

When you create and save a map, you can save it to ArcGIS Online for later use or to share with others. You can save an existing map at any point to ensure the changes you have made are saved to ArcGIS Online.

NoteNote:

Don't forget to save your changes before you close your browser window.

To save a map

  1. Click the Save button at the left of the toolbar.

If you are not signed in, the Sign In dialog box appears; enter your ArcGIS Online user name and password to sign in.

  2. The next action depends on the status of the map:
    • For an existing map that you own: The map is saved to your ArcGIS Online account.
    • For a new map that has not previously been saved: The Save Map dialog box appears. Enter a title, summary, and comma-separated list of tags that describe the map, or choose one or more existing tags by clicking the arrow below the Tags box. Select a folder from the Save in Folder list to specify which folder the map will be saved in. A thumbnail of the map is automatically generated for you; however, if you have a PNG file available locally that you want to represent the map in the home screen, click Browse to navigate to the file. Click Save to close the Save Map dialog box.

The map is saved to your ArcGIS Online account, and you can view it in My Content.

    • For an existing map that you do not own: The Save Map dialog box appears as described above. You cannot save changes to a map that you do not own, but you can choose to save your own copy of the map.

NoteNote:

Map titles must be unique. If you attempt to save a map using the same title as a map that you already own, a warning message is displayed and the Save Map dialog box remains open so you can change the title.
