Search for content

The easiest way to find content to add to your map is to search for it. In the map screen, you can search for content on ArcGIS Online, on the web, or on a specific GIS server, and add it directly to the open map. You can also search for content that's on ArcGIS Online from the home screen, find out more about the content, and add it to a map.

NoteNote:

If your account is associated with an organization in ArcGIS Online, your organization administrator may have removed the ability to search the publicly accessible web, in which case you will not see results from the web in your search results. You may also only have access to search within your own organization, not for public items on ArcGIS Online.

Search for content from within a map

You can search ArcGIS Online for services that you have access to, browse the services on a GIS server, and also search the web for publicly available services.

Click the Add Content button Add Content button on the toolbar to open the Add Content drop-down panel. Type your search criteria in the Search or URL box and press ENTER or click the Find button Find button.

Click the Add link next to a service to add the service to your map.

You can find out more information about the service before you add it to the map by hovering the mouse over the service in the list. For map services, you can add sublayers to the map as if they were feature services, which allows you to use the layers in dashboard gadgets, and also to configure the way the features are displayed.

To see a list of recent searches, click the Recent Recent searches button in search box button in the search box, and click one of the searches listed to reexecute the search.

Search for content from the home screen

In the home screen, you can search for services you have added to ArcGIS Online, and also search for services that others have added to ArcGIS Online and shared publicly or shared with a group of which you are a member.

Type your search criteria in the Find Maps & Groups search box and press ENTER or click the Find button Find button. A Search tab will be shown, with results that match your search criteria. By default the screen will show maps that matched your search criteria; click the Services tab at the top of the screen to show services instead.

If there are many results, you may want to narrow down the results shown by using the Search Filter. Click the All Results drop-down arrow at the top right of the screen and choose to show only results from either your own content, content in groups of which you are a member, or content from a specific group of which you are a member. You must be signed in to see the Search Filter. If you are signed in with an account registered with an organization on ArcGIS Online, you will also have the option to filter results to show only results from within your organization. Note that your organization administrator may have configured search to only allow showing results from within your organization.

You can also change the order that results are shown in, to help you locate the specific items you want. Click the Sort By drop-down arrow and choose an option. For example, choose Most Popular to show results ordered by usage, or Most Recently Added to show the newest items first.
