What is the Nautical Solution?
The ESRI Nautical Solution is a part of a complete system for managing data, products, workflows, and quality. It is an extension to the ArcGIS product line that tightly integrates with ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, and other extensions such as Data Interoperability, Spatial Analyst, and 3D Analyst. The Nautical Solution is bundled with complementary components that include Production Mapping, Data Reviewer, Workflow Manager, and Task Assistant Manager. Together, these components provide the modern hydrographic community with a comprehensive solution to solve challenges and inefficiencies for hydrographic data, product, and workflow management.
The Nautical Solution is centered on a paradigm that focuses on four main tenets: data, product, workflow, and quality management. The primary objective of the Nautical Solution is to efficiently manage hydrographic information, products, and integrated workflows to generate electronic, hard-copy, and raster navigational products compliant with standards. The Nautical Solution allows the creation of these products in two production environments, an enterprise or desktop.
Managing data
- Takes advantage of a logically designed nautical data dodel that is based on S-57 objects and INT1 symbol categories to organize and accurately attribute features in a geodatabase
- Enforces quality control through a combination of integrated IHO S-58 validation checks
- Enables hydrographic agencies to archive and retrieve historical changes to features
- Leverages a suite of sophisticated tools designed for nautical production agencies in addition to a comprehensive suite of GIS tools provided with ArcGIS for editing, visualizing, and analyzing information
Managing products
- Leverages the product library to assist in organizing, storing, and providing access to a hydrographic agency's catalog of nautical products
- Includes preconfigured symbols and grids and the attribute level rule bases to define symbology
- Provides a framework for the exporting, publishing, and archival of electronic and cartographic nautical products
- Integrates the data editing and product finishing environments in a single application with multiple views on information
- Works in conjunction with other ArcGIS products to enhance the visualization and reporting experience
Managing workflows
- Enables resources at production and management levels to assign, monitor, and follow predefined workflows
- Provides a desktop or Web-based solution (ArcGIS Workflow Manager) for deploying and receiving assignments to resources
- Is configurable to allow customized workflows to be developed and shared among users with different permission levels and access points
- Can track and archive feature modifications across multiple databases by multiple personnel
- Centrally manages and tracks units of work with simplified and standardized workflows
Managing quality
- Provides confidence to compilers, reviewers, and quality assurance managers through a variety of runtime and preconfigured automated validation checks
- Leverages a multiuser, versioned environment to allow compilers to simultaneously edit feature geometry and attribute information in coincident geography
- Protects an organization by ensuring longevity and traceability of edits to features and products through ArcGIS archiving
