Inserting the ICM North Arrow element

The ICM North Arrow element is generated to match ICM specifications and uses the current extent of your map sheet by default.

Once inserted, double-clicking the north arrow allows you to access the Defense North Arrow Properties Defense North Arrow Properties dialog box. Clicking Symbol in the Appearance area of the Defense North Arrow Properties dialog box causes the North Arrow Text Symbol dialog box to appear, where you can modify the ICM North Arrow text symbol.

  1. Start ArcMap.

    If the ArcMap - Getting Started dialog box appears, you can open a new or existing map document. You can also check the Do not show this dialog box in the future check box and click Open.

  2. Verify that the map is in layout view.
  3. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Defense Mapping.
  4. On the Defense Mapping toolbar, click Defense Mapping > Surround Elements > ICM North Arrow.

    The north arrow is displayed in the map layout.

  5. Double-click the north arrow.

    The Defense North Arrow Properties dialog box appears.

  6. Click the Defense North Arrow tab.
  7. Uncheck the Update dynamically check box.

    The UTM, G-M Angle, and Grid Convergence areas become editable.

  8. Click the Date drop-down arrow to choose the declination date you want to use.
  9. Perform the following for both the G-M Angle and Grid Convergence area options:
    1. Click to choose West or East for your north arrow.
    2. Type or choose the number of degrees you want to use in the Degrees text box.
    3. Type or choose the number of minutes you want to use in the Minutes text box.
    4. Type or choose the value you want to use in the Mils text box.
  10. Click the Properties button Properties next to the Zone field in the UTM area to modify the UTM zone.

    The Spatial Reference Properties dialog box appears.

    Modifying the UTM Zone parameter updates the Grid Convergence values. Modifying the Declination Date parameter (when the Update dynamically check box is unchecked) updates the G-M Angle values.

  11. Click Select.

    The Browse for Coordinate System dialog box appears.

  12. Navigate to the coordinate system you want to use.

    You must choose a projected coordinate system.

  13. Click Add.

    The Spatial Reference Properties dialog box appears.

  14. Click OK.

    The Defense North Arrow Properties dialog box appears.

  15. Click Symbol in the Appearance area to modify the north arrow text symbol.

    RemarqueRemarque :

    The text defaults to Zurich BT. If you do not have the Zurich BT font installed, the text defaults to Arial.

  16. Click any option in the Preview area or any tab and its associated options to modify the north arrow text symbol.

  17. Click OK when you are finished.

    The Defense North Arrow Properties dialog box appears.

  18. Click Large or Small in the Size area to determine the size of the north arrow.
  19. Click Color in the Appearance area to modify the color for the north arrow.

    The default color is blue.

  20. Choose the color you want to use for the north arrow.
  21. Click OK to generate the ICM North Arrow element.
