Selecting bad geometry

Importing data from other sources may introduce geometry that is not supported such as polygons with only two vertices. The Select Bad Geometry tool queries features and selects only those with bad geometry within a selected area.

The following is a list of inspections that the Select Bad Geometry tool will perform on the selected geometry:

Geometry type

Conditions checked

Points

Point geometry is not null.

Lines

  • Polyline has at least two points.
  • Polyline geometry is below database precision.
  • Polyline is simple.

Polygons

  • Polygon geometry is below database precision.
  • Polygon is simple.
  • Polygon outer ring delineation is negative area.
  • Polygon endpoints are equal.

  1. Start ArcMap.

    If the ArcMap - Getting Started dialog box appears, you can open a new or existing map document. You can also check the Do not show this dialog box in the future check box and click Open.

  2. If necessary, load data in the map.
  3. On the main menu, click Customize Toolbars Production Editing.
  4. On the main menu, click Customize Toolbars Production Editing Advanced.
  5. Click the Production Start Editing button Production Start Editing on the Production Editing toolbar.

    The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.

    If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Link Feature Manager To Attributes Window button Show/Hide Attributes on the Manage Features window.

  6. On the Production Editing Advanced toolbar, click More Editing Tools Select Bad Geometry.
  7. Drag a box around the features to be selected.

    The Select Bad Geometry Complete message box appears, which indicates the number of instances of bad geometry found in the current selection.

  8. Click OK.

The features with bad geometry are selected in the map.
