Populating the z-value with a surface
The z-values for features can be populated using a raster file to interpolate the appropriate values. The Populate Z for selected features tool allows you to specify the raster file from which you want to interpret the z-values.
3D Analyst must be installed to populate z-values using a surface.
- Start ArcMap.Conseil :
If the ArcMap - Getting Started dialog box appears, you can open a new or existing map document. You can also check the Do not show this dialog box in the future check box and click Open.
- Verify that 3D Analyst is installed and the extension is enabled.
- If necessary, load data in the map.
- On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Editing.
- On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Z Management.

Click the Production Start Editing button on the Production Editing toolbar.
Remarque :
The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.
Conseil :If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Link Feature Manager To Attributes Window button on the Manage Features window.
- Select the features whose z-values you want to populate using the Edit Tool button on the Production Editing toolbar.

Click the Populate Z for selected feature(s) button on the Production Z Management toolbar.
The Z Populate dialog box appears.

Click to choose the Populate Zs from surface option.
The Select Surface dialog box appears.

Navigate to the surface layer that applies to the features you are using.
You can use any raster file.

Click Add.
The Z Populate dialog box appears.

Click OK.
A message box appears that indicates how many features were populated using the Populate Z for Selected Features tool.
- Click OK.
