Creating a dual-zone map grid
The dual-zone map grid is used when a map's area of interest is within one kilometer of another universal transverse Mercator (UTM) zone. In these instances, two coordinate systems, one primary and one ancillary, are required. The Make Grids and Graticules Layer geoprocessing tool can be used to generate this type of grid with the grid template XML files that are installed with Defense Mapping.
- Start ArcMap.Sugerencia:
If the ArcMap - Getting Started dialog box appears, you can open a new or existing map document. You can also check the Do not show this dialog box in the future check box and click Open.
- Add a feature layer that represents the areas of interest (AOIs) for the map sheets that will be used for map grid generation.
- Select the AOIs that will be used for grid generation.
-
Click the ArcToolbox Window button on the Standard toolbar.
The ArcToolbox window appears.
- Navigate to Cartography Tools > Grids and Graticules.
- Double-click the Make Grids and Graticules Layer tool.
The Make Grids and Graticules Layer dialog box appears.
- Click the Browse button next to the Grid Template (XML File) text box.
The Open dialog box appears.
- Navigate to the XML file that contains the grid definition to use for creating the grid over the selected area of interest feature.
The grid XML files are installed at <Installation Location>:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\GridTemplates\DefenseMapping.
- TLM50_Dual—Creates a grid for a TLM at 1:50,000 scale
- TLM50_Dual_Equatorial—Creates a grid for a TLM at 1:50,000 scale when the area of interest is near the equator
- TLM100_Dual—Creates a grid for a TLM at 1:100,000 scale
- TLM100_Dual_Equatorial—Creates a grid for a TLM at 1:100,000 scale when the area of interest is near the equator
- Click Open.
The Make Grids and Graticules Layer dialog box appears. The Output Layer and Name parameters are automatically populated based on the name of the XML file.
- For the Input Area of Interest [feature or extent] parameter, do the following:
- Choose the Feature Layer option.
- Click the Feature Layer drop-down arrow and choose the layer that contains the area of interest.
- Click the Browse button next to the Input Feature Dataset text box.
The Input Feature Dataset dialog box appears.
- Navigate to the feature dataset where you want to create the grid.Nota:
The spatial reference for the input feature dataset should have the same geographic coordinate system as what is specified in the grid template XML file.
- Click Add.
The Make Grids and Graticules Layer dialog box appears.
- Expand the Advanced Settings (optional) area.
Values are automatically populated for the parameters, down to Ancillary Coordinate System 3 (optional).
- Click the Properties button next to the Ancillary Coordinate System 1 (optional) text box.
This is the ancillary or secondary coordinate system for the grid.
The Spatial Reference Properties dialog box appears.
- Click Select.
- Browse to and choose the appropriate UTM zone from the Projected Coordinate Systems/UTM/WGS 1984 folder.
- Click Add to add the UTM zone projection information.
- Click OK.
The Make Grids and Graticules Layer dialog box appears.
- Click OK.
The grid components are created in the feature dataset specified. The progress of the grid creation is displayed in the Make Grids and Graticules Layer window.
- Click Close.
