What is Schematic Dataset Editor?

Schematic Dataset Editor provides functions to create, modify, and visualize all the schematic dataset resources. It greatly reduces the learning curve of defining and customizing specific dataset parameters and allows you to quickly customize and tailor an existing configuration to a new set of requirements.

The Schematic Dataset Editor Graphical User Interface is organized around two main windows:

1. The Schematic Items window at the left lets you navigate among all the schematic dataset resources specified in your schematic dataset.
2. The Editor window at the right concerns all parameters related to the schematic resource currently selected in the Schematic Items window.

   These parameters are organized in a set of different tabs depending on the type of the resource selected in the Schematic Items windows. For example, when a schematic diagram template is currently selected in the Schematic Items window, all its configuration parameters display through four tabs in the Editor window: the Properties, Associations, Layouts, and Rules tabs. For a schematic feature class, only two tabs display in the Editor window—the Properties and Associations tabs.

There are two main ways to visualize schematic dataset resources in the Schematic Items window:

• By displaying schematic dataset resources in a Project Tree view:

  With the Project Tree view, each schematic diagram template specified in the schematic dataset represents a main tree entry with its associated schematic feature classes displayed as branches under it. Under the schematic diagram template main tree entries, there are three other main entries, one for listing the Data Sources, one for all the External References used in the schematic dataset, and the last one for listing the Unassociated Schematic Feature Classes when such schematic feature classes exist in the schematic dataset. Each of these entries displays at the same tree level as each schematic diagram template entry.

• By displaying schematic dataset resources in a Tiles view:

  With the Tiles view, schematic resources are mainly organized around three sections, a first section that lists all the Schematic Diagram Templates currently specified in the schematic dataset, a second dedicated to the Schematic Feature Classes, and a third section for the Data Sources. When external references are used in your schematic dataset, there is also a last section, called External References, for listing these references.

With the Tiles view mode, you can display each resource item with normal icons (Tiles), larger icons (Large Icons), smaller icons (Small Icons), or an arrangement that lets you see different kinds of information about each resource (Details).

To change the way the Schematic Items window content displays, use the Views button in the Schematic Dataset Editor toolbar. Each time you click the Views button, the Schematic Items window changes the way it displays your schematic dataset resources, alternating between Project Tree view, Tiles view, Large Icons view, Small Icons view, and a view called Details that shows several columns of information about the schematic dataset items. You can also click the arrow next to the Views button and directly click the menu item corresponding to the type of arrangement you wish.

Toolbars in Schematic Dataset Editor

The primary tools, commands, and menus in the Schematic Dataset Editor toolbar are regrouped in a single toolbar.

• The Views drop-down menu groups commands in a way that allows arranging the Schematic Items window content in different ways.
  • Click the Project Tree menu item to arrange the schematic items as a tree where each schematic diagram template specified in the schematic dataset represents a main tree entry with its associated schematic feature classes displayed as branches under it.
  • Click the Tiles menu item to organize the schematic resources in sections, each section being dedicated to a particular type of schematic resource (that is, a section for schematic diagram templates, another for schematic feature classes, and so on).
  • Click the Large Icons menu item to tile the schematic resources in sections but display each resource with a larger icon than the one used in the normal Tiles view.
  • Click the Small Icons menu item to tile the schematic resources in sections but display each resource with a smaller icon than the one used in the normal Tiles view.
  • Click the Details menu item to tile the schematic resources in sections and display some information about each resource.
• The Open command

  This command allows you to browse and select the schematic dataset you want to edit in Dataset Editor. It is available when no schematic dataset is already edited in Dataset Editor. Clicking the Open command opens the Select Schematic Dataset dialog box, which allows you to browse and select the schematic dataset to edit.

• The New drop-down menu lets you access some commands to create the main schematic dataset resources. The commands available from this menu depend on the Schematics resource currently selected in the Schematic Items window; other items can be added to the drop-down menu:
  • Click the New Schematic Diagram Template command to create a new schematic diagram template. This menu item displays in the New drop-down menu when the upper tree entry corresponding to the schematic dataset is the resource currently selected in the Schematic Items window.   • Click the New Schematic Feature Class command to create a new schematic feature class. This menu item displays in the New drop-down menu when the upper tree entry corresponding to the schematic dataset or any schematic diagram template is the resource currently selected in the Schematic Items window.   • Click the New Attribute command to create a new attribute for the schematic diagram template or schematic feature class currently selected in the Schematic Items window. Click here for more details on schematic attribute creation.
  • Click New External References to add a new external reference. This menu item displays in the New drop-down menu when the External References main entry is currently selected in the Schematic Items window.
  • Click New Data Source to create a new data source. This menu item displays in the New drop-down menu when the Data Sources main entry is currently selected in the Schematic Items window. Click here for more details on data source creation.
• The Save command

  Clicking the Save command saves all the schematic dataset configuration parameters in the geodatabase. This command is available when a schematic dataset is edited and when any of its schematic resources have been modified or newly created and not already saved. This command is enabled only when a schematic dataset resource has changed or a new one has been created.

• The Preferences drop-down menu allows you to access a set of menu items that can be checked or unchecked to enable or disable specific running mode or display mode.
  • When the Open data source connections menu item is checked, Schematic Dataset Editor automatically opens all the data sources referenced in the schematic dataset being edited. Note that due to data source opening time cost, it is better to disable this running mode before closing Dataset Editor if you need to enable it for the currently edited schematic dataset.   • When the Sort attributes by type menu item is checked, Schematic Dataset Editor automatically displays the attributes specified on a schematic feature class sorted by type; that is, Associated Field attribute first, then Constant attribute, and so on. This menu item is checked by default. Note that this display mode is interesting only when the Schematic Items window displays as a Project Tree.
  • When the Sort schematic feature classes by type menu item is checked, Schematic Dataset Editor automatically displays any list of schematic feature classes by type. This menu item is checked by default.
  • When the Show tree lines menu item is checked, lines appear to clearly show the tree branches of the project tree. This display mode is interesting only when the Schematic Items window displays as a Project Tree. This menu item is unchecked by default.
  • Click the Restore defaults menu item for restoring all the menu items that display above to their default state; that is, checked for Verify on save, Sort attributes by type, Sort schematic feature classes by type, and unchecked for the other menu items.
  Nota:

  Checking/Unchecking any of these menu items enables/disables the related running mode or display mode not only for the current schematic dataset editing session but also for any schematic dataset editing session that will be started within Dataset Editor afterwards.
