Add Geoprocessing tools to the Ribbon

The ArcGIS Mapping Web Part provides you with the ability to create tools that you can add to the ribbon that will execute geoprocessing tasks. If you are unfamiliar with geoprocessing, refer to What is geoprocessing?

To be able to configure a geoprocessing tool, you need to have the web part in edit mode:

  1. There are two ways to begin the configuration of a geoprocessing tool.

    1. Begin configuration with the Add Tool button.

      1. Click Add Tool on the Application tab of the web part's ribbon:
        Add Tool button
      2. The Add Tool dialog appears. Select Geoprocessing from the Tool drop-down menu. Add a tooltip if desired, and select Tab and Group if needed. Click Configure:
Geoprocessing selection on Add Tool dialog

    2. Begin configuration with the Add Geoprocessing button.

      1. Click the Add Geoprocessing button:
        Add Geoprocessing tool
      2. The GP Tool dialog appears. Add a label and tooltip. Make any changes to the Tab and Group where the tool will reside. Click Configure:
        Add Tool (Geoprocessing) dialog

  2. Both the buttons now take you to the Select geoprocessing task dialog. Select an ArcGIS Server connection from the drop-down menu or type a URL to an ArcGIS Server in the box. Click the search button if necessary:
    Geoprocessing Browse service
  3. The geoprocessing tasks available on that server are listed. Locate and select the one you need, then click OK:
    Select geoprocessing tool
  4. The Configure Geoprocessing wizard appears. Click Next to enter the input parameters, output parameters, and title and layer order. Click OK and then click OK again when finished:
    Configure geoprocessing
  5. Save your changes to the Map Web Part.
  6. The geoprocessing task button is added to the ribbon:
    Configure or Execute Geoprocessing
  7. Once you have added the button and you are editing the web part you have additional options available to you:

    • Click Configure to reconfigure the tool.
    • Click Execute to run the tool and make its results available on the map for all users.
