Introduction

Tracking Server provides functionality to receive and transmit real-time data to a wide variety of ESRI clients-including ArcSDE, ArcGIS, and Web clients. Data from different sources is received by Tracking Server, which serves as a centralized hub for collecting and disseminating the real-time data. Using data links, you can then log the data to ArcSDE or send it to other end clients. You can also create and apply actions to process the data at the point of reception.

Tracking Server includes a complete Tracking Viewer that can be used to easily view your tracking data. Also available for Tracking Server is the Tracking Client API, which helps you build custom tracking Web applications that display real-time data. These web applications can be built using Flex, Silverlight, .Net, or Java. The Tracking Client API must be downloaded from the Tracking Server Resource Center.

Tracking Server lends itself to a host of uses in a variety of environments. Depending on the needs of your organization, you can configure the settings to optimize your collection, display, and dissemination of real-time data.

Tracking Server can deliver real-time information to two different clients out-of-the-box: ArcGIS Tracking Analyst and Tracking Viewer. ArcGIS Tracking Analyst is an extension to ArcGIS Desktop. Tracking Viewer is a Web-based client built using Flex technology. Tracking Server provides the mechanism for transmitting real-time feeds, and the client applications provide the ability to symbolize the events and visualize the tracked events over a base map. The background maps need to be provided from a separate source, such as ArcGIS Server or ArcGIS.com.
