The first step for building an application with the ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit is to install the ArcGIS Engine Runtime. The runtime is a redistributable version of ArcObjects needed to run ArcGIS engine applications developed with the ArcGIS Engine Developer.
The ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit contains all the required resources for developing custom, stand-alone desktop Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapping applications that are then deployed on the ArcGIS Engine Runtime platform. The features of the ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit are
  • Samples—Code projects that demonstrate common uses and best practices
  • Tools—Executables that facilitate ArcObjects development
  • IDE Integration—Wizards, templates, and code snippets that integrate into your IDE to aid you in coding against ArcObjects.
The ArcGIS Engine Java Help System includes several help topics on building ArcGIS Engine applications using Java APIs. On windows the Java Help System requires a separate install and on Solaris and Linux, the Java Help System is accessible by sourcing the scripts startJavaHelp and stopJavaHelp in <ArcGISInstallDir>.

Installing ArcGIS Engine Runtime

To install ArcGIS Engine Runtime, do the following:
  1. Insert the ArcGIS Engine Runtime DVD in the CD drive and navigate to the CD drive.
  2. Follow the ArcGIS Engine Runtime Setup instructions. ArcGIS component object model (COM) libraries will be installed automatically.
  3. To use the runtime with the java application programming interface (API), you will need to install the java ArcGIS Engine support feature. The java feature will install java archives for each COM library. Prior to installing the java feature, Java 5.0 or higher must be installed on the machine. See the following screen shot:

ArcGIS Engine runtime can also be installed silently. For more information refer Installing ArcGIS Engine Runtime silently on Windows

Installing ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit

To install the ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit for java, insert the ArcGIS Engine 9.3 Developer Kit for windows or Solaris/Linux DVD into the CD drive to automatically start the setup program and follow the setup instructions.  At the end of the ArcGIS Engine SDK installation, the Software Authorization wizard will appear. It is required to register before you begin development.
The installation directory that was created when you installed the prerequisite ArcGIS Engine Runtime or ArcGIS Desktop software will be used for ArcGIS Engine.

Installing ArcGIS Java Help System for Windows

To install ArcGIS Java Help System for Windows platform insert the ArcGIS Engine 9.3 Developer Kit for windows to automatically start the setup program. Choose the ArcGIS Help System for the Java Platform option and follow the setup instructions.

The Java Help system can be accessed from Start Menu-> ArcGIS->Developer Help->Start Java Help.

Registering your software

Before you can begin to develop your solution, you must register and authorize the ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit. A valid ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit registration number is required for registration.

The Software Authorization Wizard has the following main options:
  • Registration by using the wizard
  • Using an authorization file obtained from the ESRI Customer Service Web site
This article discusses registration by using the Software Authorization Wizard. Please see the Customer Service Web site for product registration and other information on your ESRI products.
Software Authorization Wizard
  • You can register your software by using the Software Authorization Wizard. The most common method is using the Internet to register. See the following screen shot:
  • After you enter your registration contact information in the wizard, you need to enter the registration number that you received when you purchased the product. This number may have been e-mailed to you or printed and included with your product media. See the following screen shot:
  • Next, you need to answer a few market study questions. After the questions are answered, you can submit your registration to ESRI for validation and authorization. If successful, the ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit is authorized and unlocked for you to use to start developing custom ArcGIS solutions
