Locking and unlocking geographies

Esri Redistricting Online has a locking feature. Locking prevents the selected geography from being assigned to a district other than the district it is locked to. Locking also prevents a geography from being unassigned. All geographies by default are unlocked.

Steps:
  1. On the Create ribbon, choose the desired selection level from the drop-down menu (Optional).
    Selection Level drop-down menu

If the selection level is set to Automatic, the selection changes with the map scale. For example, the district map may be zoomed in such that block groups are visible. At this extent, block groups are the selection level, and therefore, block groups are the geography that can be assigned to a district.

To enforce selection to a specific geography (for example, county, tract, block group, or block), choose the desired geography from the drop-down menu.

  2. Click the desired locking option:
    • Lock Geography Lock Geography button prevents the selected geography from being assigned to a district other than the district it is already assigned to.
    • Unlock Geography Unlock Geography button allows the geography to be assigned to districts.
  3. Click the geography on the map that you want to lock/unlock.

Based on whether the Lock Geography Lock Geography button or Unlock Geography Unlock Geography button tool is used, the selected geography is locked/unlocked. On the map, you can see that a locked geography is symbolized with a crosshatch pattern.
