Working with the legend
The legend contains visible layers on the map and includes graphic representations for features on the map. Also included is a written description of what the symbols on the map represent.
The layers that are turned on in the map layers determine the layers you will see in the legend. See Working with map layers to learn more.
In this topic, you will learn how to do the following:
Displaying the legend
The layers that are turned on in the map layers determine the layers you will see in the legend. You can display the legend to understand how features are symbolized on the map. The legend also contains tools to let you reset the legend and dave the legend as an image file.

On the OnSite toolbar, click Legend.
The Legend dialog box appears. Each layer that is visible in map layers is also displayed in the legend. In the legend, you can view the symbology for each layer, toggle layer visibility, reset the legend settings, and save the legend as an image file.
Showing legend options
The legend options contain tools to let you work interactively with the map legend. You can toggle the legend options to show tools for resetting the legend settings and saving the legend as an image file.
- Display the legend.
- Click Show Options.
The legend toolbar expands to display options for resetting the legend settings and saving the legend as an image file.


Reset the legend settings
As you work with to analyze potential market areas, you may be working with multiple layers. To limit the features displayed on the map you can hide layers so the features are not drawn on the map. Using the reset settings option, you can reset the legend to the default settings. By default, all layers are turned on in the legend.
- Display the legend.
- Show the legend options.
- Check the Hide or Show checkboxes to manage the visibility of map layers from the legend (Optional).
- Hide lets you turn off features on the map.
- Show lets you display features on the map.
Visibility of layers can also be controlled through the legend.
- Click Reset settings
to return to the default legend settings.
The default legend settings turn on all layers in the legend, so that all features are displayed on the map.
Saving the legend as an image
You can export the OnSite map legend to an image file for archiving and distribution. On export, the image file displays only the visible layers in the legend. If you opt to hide a layer, the layer will not display on the legend image. The legend image is saved as a JPEG file.
- Display the legend.
- Show the legend options.
- Click Save legend as image
.
The Select location for download by... dialog box appears.
- Navigate to the desired directory.
- Update the file name for the image (Optional).
- Click Save.
