Licensing the Service Editor

LegacyLegacy:

ArcGIS 10 is the last release of the stand-alone ArcGIS Image Server product. The image service definition (.ISDef) has been replaced by an improved geodatabase data model—the mosaic dataset—which can be published as an image service using the ArcGIS Server Image extension.

You can install all the components of ArcGIS Image Server separately or on different computers. Although these components can be installed on different computers, they need to be on a common network so they can communicate with each other.

If you are installing the components on different computers, you need to identify those computer names on the Server Configuration dialog box for each of the components' allow lists. For example, on the Server Configuration dialog box below, Server manager allow list has two computer names that will be allowed to access this server configuration. A comma is used to delimit the computer names. Service provider allow list uses an asterisk (*) to specify that any computer can be a service provider for this server. Service editor allow list shows only one computer name, thereby limiting image service definition editing to that machine.

When you install only the Service Editor component, you can provide a license file and follow the direction using the dialog box that appears; however, you are not requested to provide a license file. This is because the licensing remains with the server component. Therefore, when you use the Image Service Definition Editor toolbar in ArcMap to create or edit an image service definition, you should point it to a running and licensed server.

NoteNote:

Be sure that the computer name where the Service Editor is located is listed in Service editor allow list on the Server Configuration dialog box.

Steps:
  1. Edit the server configuration.
    1. Click Start > Programs > ArcGIS > Image Server 10 > Server Manager.

The Image Server Manager window appears.

    2. For a new server configuration, click Add Server, type the host machine name, then click OK.
    3. To edit a server configuration, click the Edit button Edit the server configuration to open the Server Configuration dialog box.
    4. Type the computer names or IP addresses in the Service editor allow list text box to allow these computers as service editors.

Separate the computer names using commas.

This feature is used to restrict the computers that can connect as image service definition editors and use the available licenses. You can type * to specify that all computers are allowed, but it is not recommended.

    5. Click OK.

The changes will take place once the server is restarted.

    6. Click the Stop button Stop the server to stop the server.

Wait a few seconds for the server to completely shut down.

    7. Click the Start button Start the server to start the server.
  2. License the Service Editor.
    1. Start ArcMap.
    2. In ArcMap, click Customize on the Main menu, point to Toolbars, then click Image Service Definition Editor.
    3. Click the Image Service drop-down menu on the Image Service Definition Editor toolbar and click New Image Service.
    4. Type the name of the computer running ArcGIS Image Server's server in the Server name text box.
    5. Optionally, edit the port number if your server is running on a different port.
    6. Click OK.

If the server is licensed and detected, continue creating your image service definition.
