Converting ArcGIS Data Appliance—Basemap Collection services to another projection

Map services in the ArcGIS Data Appliance 4.0—Basemap Collection are in the WGS 1984 Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere) coordinate system. Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere handles datum transformations better than the original Web Mercator projection (WKID 102113), which is what some ArcGIS Online services were previously in.

Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere (WKID 102100) is not supported in ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 without Service Pack 1 installed. If you are using ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 without Service Pack 1, you can continue to use the Web Mercator projection (WKID 102113) by following the instructions below to convert the services to Web Mercator.

Converting from Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere (default) to Web Mercator

If you have map cache services in the Web Mercator projection, you can convert the services on the ArcGIS Data Appliance 4.0—Basemap Collection to Web Mercator.

Converting a cached map service on the ArcGIS Data Appliance from Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere (default) to Web Mercator involves replacing the tiling scheme configuration file (conf.xml) and the MXD file (.mxd) used to publish the service.

To convert the ArcGIS Data Appliance 4.0—Basemap Collection map cache services from Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere to Web Mercator, follow these instructions:

  1. Locate the ConvertToWebMercator folder on the ArcGIS Data Appliance 4.0—Basemap Collection, for example, ..\Basemap_Collection\ConvertToWebMercator.
  2. Copy ..\Basemap_Collection\ConvertToWebMercator\cache to the appropriate folder on the ArcGIS Data Appliance, for example, ..\Basemap_Collection\cache.
  3. Copy ..\Basemap_Collection\ConvertToWebMercator\source_documents to the appropriate folder on the ArcGIS Data Appliance, for example, ..\Basemap_Collection\source_documents.
  4. Restart the services.

Converting from Web Mercator to Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere

These instructions are to convert the services on the ArcGIS Data Appliance 4.0—Basemap Collection from Web Mercator back to the default of Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere to match the projection of the services on other ArcGIS Data Appliance 4.0 collections or on the ArcGIS Online servers.

  4. Restart the services.
