Opening customization files

ArcPad Studio allows you to create and edit the following types of customization files:

ArcPad Studio also allows you to view and query ArcPad .axf files, as well as edit and create layer definitions for layers in ArcPad .axf files.

NoteNote:

You can have multiple customization files open at the same time in an ArcPad Studio session.

Opening an applet file

Steps:
  1. Start ArcPad Studio.
  2. Click the Open button Open on the standard toolbar.

    The Open dialog box appears.

  3. Navigate to the folder that contains the applet file.

    The default file type filter in the Open dialog box is ArcPad Studio files. You can select ArcPad applet files (*.apa) in the Files of type box to restrict the files displayed to applet files only.

  4. Click the applet file you want to open, and click Open.

Opening a default configuration file

Steps:
  1. Start ArcPad Studio.
  2. Click the Open button Open on the standard toolbar.

    The Open dialog box appears.

  3. Navigate to the folder that contains the default configuration file.

    The default file type filter in the Open dialog box is ArcPad Studio files. You can select ArcPad configuration files (*.apx) in the Files of type box to restrict the files displayed to default configuration files only.

  4. Click the default configuration file you want to open, and click Open.

Opening a layer definition file

Steps:
  1. Start ArcPad Studio.
  2. Click the Open button Open on the standard toolbar.

    The Open dialog box appears.

  3. Navigate to the folder that contains the layer definition file.

    The default file type filter in the Open dialog box is ArcPad Studio files. You can select ArcPad layer definition files (*.apl) in the Files of type box to restrict the files displayed to layer definition files only.

  4. Click the layer definition file you want to open, and click Open.
TipTip:

To open a layer definition for an ArcPad .axf layer, double-click the layer of interest in the Feature Layers branch of the Tree View.

Opening a layer definition from an ArcPad .axf layer

Steps:
  1. Open the ArcPad AXF file.
  2. Double-click the layer with the layer definition you want to open.

    • The layer definition opens in a new window.
    • If the AXF layer you select already has an existing layer definition, it will be displayed in the new window.

Opening a script source code file

Steps:
  1. Start ArcPad Studio.
  2. Click the Open button Open on the standard toolbar.

    The Open dialog box appears.

  3. Navigate to the folder that contains the script file.

    The default file type filter in the Open dialog box is ArcPad Studio files. You can select VBScript files (*.vbs), JScript files (*.js), or Python files (*.py) in the Files of type box to restrict the files displayed to a specific file type.

  4. Click the script file you want to open, and click Open.

Opening a script source code file that is associated with a customization file

Steps:
  1. Start ArcPad Studio.
  2. Open an applet, default configuration, or layer definition file that has an associated .js, .vbs, or .py file.
  3. Click the Edit Script button Edit Script on the standard toolbar.

Opening an ArcPad .axf file

Steps:
  1. Start ArcPad Studio.
  2. Click the Open button Open on the standard toolbar.

    The Open dialog box appears.

  3. Navigate to the folder that contains the ArcPad .axf file.

    The default file type filter in the Open dialog box is ArcPad Studio files. You can select ArcPad AXF files (*.axf) in the Files of type box to restrict the files displayed to ArcPad AXF files only.

  4. Click the ArcPad .axf file you want to open, and click Open.

    To open or create a layer definition for an ArcPad AXF layer, double-click the layer of interest in the Feature Layers branch of the Tree View.

Opening a recently opened file

Steps:
  1. Start ArcPad Studio.
  2. Click the File menu.
  3. Click a file from the list of recently opened files.
