ArcPad support of ArcGIS symbology
Symbols are graphic elements that are used in map displays. There are a number of symbol types, such as the following:
- Markers that are primarily used to display point locations
- Line symbols used to display linear features and boundaries
- Fill symbols used to fill in polygons
- Text symbols used to set the font, size, color, and other text properties
ArcGIS for Desktop supports a wide range of symbols, some of which are not suitable for mobile GIS, either because of their complexity in display (for example, too much detail for display on a small screen) or complexity in design (for example, requires computational power not available on all mobile devices).
ArcGIS symbols that are fully supported by ArcPad are listed in the following table:
Markers | Line symbols | Fill symbols | Text symbols |

ArcGIS symbols that are only partially supported by ArcPad, and therefore may look slightly different when you export them, are listed in the following table:
Markers | Line symbols | Fill symbols | Text symbols |

Correct display of character marker symbols relies on the presence of TrueType fonts. If your chosen character marker symbol does not appear in ArcPad, you might need to copy the missing font file to your field device. For more information on TrueType fonts, refer to How symbology works in ArcPad.
ArcGIS symbols that are not supported by ArcPad are listed in the following table. You should not use these symbols when creating mobile GIS projects in ArcMap.
