The system specifications, including hardware requirements, supported operating systems, J2SE SDK, and Web servers and servlet engines, that are required to run ArcIMS on Windows are available at http://support.esri.com. Visit http://support.esri.com, select software > ArcIMS > System Requirements and verify that your machine meets system requirements before installing ArcIMS.
Check the ESRI Support Site for patches and service packs at http://support.esri.com, select Downloads > Patches and Service Packs > ArcIMS.

The following system software is required to run ArcIMS.
ArcIMS works in conjunction with Web server software. A Web server must be installed and operational in order to start serving maps.
For information on setting up your Web server and Servlet Engine visit http://support.esri.com/search/KbDocument.asp?dbid=31218.
System administration access to the Web server computer is necessary, and knowing how to stop and start your Web server is mandatory.
For supported Web servers see Supported Software Environments.
ArcIMS requires a servlet engine if the Web server does not support servlets natively. For information on setting up your Web server and Servlet Engine visit http://support.esri.com/search/KbDocument.asp?dbid=31218.
The servlet engine must use Java 2 Platform Standard Edition Runtime Engine (J2SE JRE) or Java 2 Platform Standard Edition Software Development Kit (J2SE JDK) 1.5.0_13 or higher.
For supported servlet engines see Supported Software Environments for other servlet engines and their ESRI support level.
Author, Designer, Administrator ,and the Java Viewers require a system registered Java 2 Platform Standard Edition Java Runtime Environment (J2SE JRE) version 1.5.0_13 or higher. A J2SE JRE does not have to be installed prior to installing ArcIMS, the post installation setup will provide you with the opportunity to install and configure a system registered J2SE JRE 1.5.0_13.
Note: J2SE JRE is not needed if J2SE SDK 1.5.0_13 or higher is installed on the computer.
ArcIMS and ArcIMS Web ADFs are supported on the Intel and AMD 64-bit processor families. They are certified to run as a 32-bit application on 64-bit (x64) Microsoft Windows. Web server support is based on the Web server vendor's support of 64-bit Microsoft Windows. Check with a Web server vendor, if the Web server is supported on 64-bit Microsoft Windows. See Using ArcIMS with a 64-bit processor for more information.
For all other additional system requirements, such as supported versions of Web browsers, ColdFusion, ActiveX, and all additional requirements for Service Administrator, Connectors and ArcSDE, visit http://support.esri.com and select software > ArcIMS > System Requirements.
Windows Installer 3.1 requirement
Launching Setup.exe will automatically install Windows Installer 3.1 if it is not present on your system. If Windows Installer 3.1 is present, the installation will proceed without installing Windows Installer 3.1. The Windows Installer 3.1 software (Instmsi3.exe) is provided in the installation media.
Internet Explorer and MDAC
Internet Explorer 6 or higher, and MDAC 2.5 or higher is required for ArcIMS ArcMap Server. If you do not have Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.5 or higher, the install will optionally let you install it. You must obtain and install Internet Explorer 6 or higher.
ArcGIS Authorization file
ArcIMS Spatial server and ArcIMS ArcMap Server require an ArcGIS authorization file for use. See To obtain an Authorization file for more information. Each new version of ArcIMS requires a new authorization file.
ArcIMS Web ADF for the Microsoft .NET Framework
The ArcIMS Web ADF for the Microsoft .NET Framework requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 to be installed on your machine.
The Visual Studio Integration feature (a sub feature of the Software Developer Kit) of the ArcIMS Web ADF for the Microsoft .NET Framework setup, requires Visual Studio 2005. If Visual Studio 2005 is not detected on your machine, this feature will not be available to install.
