Author includes a scale bar to help you determine the scale of your data at different extents. The scale bar is displayed by default and uses default settings for map, scale, and screen units. You can remove the scale bar from the display and change the properties for units.

The scale bar is a utility while you are using Author and is not saved as part of the map configuration file.

  1. Click the View menu.
  2. Check Scale Bar to add it to your map, or uncheck Scale Bar to remove it from your map.

  1. Click the View menu.
  2. Point to Scale Bar Properties.
  3. Set map, scale, and screen units.
    • Point to Map Units and click Decimal Degrees, Feet, or Meters.
    • Point to Scale Units and click Miles, Feet, Meters, or Kilometers.
    • Point to Screen Units and click Centimeters or Inches.

By default, the map units are set to decimal degrees in Author. If the scale bar values do not seem correct, check if the map units under the scale bar properties are correct.
