Installing ArcIMS Metadata Solutions

This topic also provides information on installing the other Metadata Solutions installation options.

Note:

These instructions describe the Metadata Solutions installation only. To install the ArcIMS Host (Map Creation and Administration, Connectors, and ArcIMS Application Server) and ArcIMS Spatial Server, refer to Performing a typical installation.

How to prepare to install ArcIMS Metadata Solutions

1. Verify that your site meets system requirements. For system requirement information, see Verify system requirements.
2. Log in as a user with administrator privileges.
3. Close all applications on your computer.
4. Insert the ArcIMS media into the appropriate drive to automatically launch the setup program.

How to install ArcIMS Metadata Solutions

1. During the installation, you are asked to read the license agreement and accept it, or exit if you don't agree with the terms.
2. At the Select Features dialog box, expand the Metadata Solutions feature by clicking the + sign to view the subfeatures. The Metadata Solutions feature contains the Gazetteer, Z39.50 Connector, OAI-PMH Client, OAI-PMH Connector, and CSW Connector subfeatures. Click the drop-down arrow to the left of the Metadata Solutions subfeature that you would like to install. From the list, select Will be installed on local hard drive to install the selected Metadata Solutions feature.
3. To complete the installation, follow the directions on your machine.

• If you choose to install the Z39.50 Connector, you need to configure the connector before you can use it. See Configuring the Z39.50 connector.

• If you choose to install the OAI-PMH connector and you do not perform the automated Web server-Servlet Engine configuration provided in the post installation setup, you need to configure your Web server. See the steps provided at ESRI Support Web site in knowledge base document 37382 for details. After your Web server has been configured, you need to configure the OAI-PMH connector for your Metadata Service. See the Creating_Metadata_Services.pdf Harvesting Documents section for details.

• If you choose to install the OAI-PMH client, no further configuration is required.

• If you choose to install the CSW connector and you do not perform the automated Web server-Servlet Engine configuration provided in the post installation setup, you need to configure your Web server. See the steps provided at ESRI Support Web site in knowledge base document 37382 for details. If your metadata service name is something other than "Metadata", or your ArcIMS Metadata Service is located on a different machine than the CSW connector, then use the CSW connector configuration Web page to modify the connector's properties. To access the CSW Connector configuration Web page, navigate to http://hostname/aimscsw/login.jsf.

Note:

The setup stores the necessary configuration information to use the applications in the \profiles\username location of the user that installed ArcIMS. For example, C:\Documents and Settings\username. If you need alternate login accounts to use ArcIMS applications, copy the aimsdefault.properties file from the profiles\username folder of the account that installed ArcIMS to the \profiles\username folder of the alternate users. It is important to copy the file (which is updated during the initial installation) that resides in the installer's profile folder. The aimsdefault.properties file located in the ArcIMS\Common installation location contains default values and does not work.
