The system specifications, including hardware requirements, supported operating systems, and Web servers, that are required to run ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform on Windows are available at http://support.esri.com. Visit http://support.esri.com, select Software > ArcGIS Server > System Requirements and verify that your machine meets system requirements before installing ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform.
Supported operating system
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Service Pack 3 or later
Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 1 or later
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Service Pack 3 or later
Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Service Packs are optional
Microsoft Windows Vista
Microsoft Windows Server 2008
(All of the above hereafter collectively referred to as Windows)
The following disk space is required to install ArcGIS Server Java Edition:
Disk Space Requirements |
|
Complete installation |
1850 MB 150 MB of this disk space will be required on your system drive. Additional space is required if you run the Developer Help setup. |
Windows Installer 3.1 requirement
Launching Setup.exe will automatically install Windows Installer 3.1 if it is not present on your system. If Windows Installer 3.1 is present, the installation will proceed without installing Windows Installer 3.1. The Windows Installer 3.1 software (Instmsi3.exe) is provided in the installation media.
Python
Python 2.5.1 and Numerical Python 1.0.3 are required to support certain core Geoprocessing tools. It is recommended that Python 2.5.1 and Numerical Python 1.0.3 are installed by the ArcGIS Server setup. Users can choose to not install Python 2.5.1 and Numerical Python 1.0.3 by unselecting the Python feature during installation. The Python feature is a sub-feature of Server Object Container.
Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher required
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0 or higher is required. You must obtain and install Internet Explorer version 6.0 or higher, prior to installing ArcGIS Server Java Edition.
Support for 64-bit processors
ArcGIS Server 9.2 and higher is supported on the Intel and AMD 64-bit processor families. ArcGIS Server is a native 32-bit application. It is certified to run as a 32-bit application on 64-bit (x64) Microsoft Windows. Web server support is based on the Web server vendor’s support of 64-bit Microsoft Windows. Check with a Web server vendor, if the Web server is supported on 64-bit Microsoft Windows.
Additional Software and Development Requirements
An OpenGL 1.2 or higher compliant video card is required, with at least 32 MB of video memory. However, 64 MB of video memory or higher is recommended.
ArcGIS Authorization file
Each ArcGIS Server Object Container machine requires an authorization file. See To obtain an authorization file for more information. Each new version of ArcGIS Server Object Container requires a new authorization file.
Interaction between ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform 9.3 and ArcGIS products previous to 9.3
If the following products are installed on your machine and are a version previous to 9.3, they must be uninstalled before proceeding with the ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform setup:
ArcGIS Desktop
ArcInfo Workstation
ArcReader standalone
ArcIMS
ArcIMS Web ADF for the Java Platform
ArcIMS Web ADF for the .NET Framework
ArcGIS Server
ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform
ArcGIS Server for the .NET Framework
ArcGIS Server Web ADF Runtime for the .NET Framework
ArcGIS Engine Runtime
ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit
ArcGIS Desktop Developer Kit
ArcGIS Image Server (and all clients)
The ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform setup will display a dialog if conflicting versions of these products exist on your machine. If so, you must uninstall these products, then run the ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform setup again to proceed with your installation.
These products, if they are all version 9.3 can exist together on the same machine.
Notes on installing ArcGIS 9.3 products
The ArcGIS 9.3 products, ArcGIS Engine Runtime, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcReader standalone, and ArcGIS Server will install to the same installation directory. When installing multiple ArcGIS products on the same machine, the first ArcGIS 9.3 product installed will determine the installation location for all subsequent ArcGIS 9.3 products. For example, if ArcGIS Desktop is installed to C:\Desktop, the installation location for ArcGIS 9.3 will be C:\Desktop\ArcGIS. If you install ArcGIS Server for the Java Plaform next, you will not be provided with the opportunity to browse to an installation location. The ArcGIS Desktop installation has predetermined the installation location for all ArcGIS 9.3 products. Therefore, in this example, ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform will also be installed to C:\Desktop\ArcGIS. If you run out of disk space while installing an ArcGIS 9.3 product, you will need to uninstall all ArcGIS 9.3 products (listed above) and reinstall them to a location where more disk space is available. ArcGIS 9.3 products (excluding ArcSDE, ArcIMS and ArcInfo Workstation) cannot be installed to different locations. NOTE: If you have ArcIMS ArcMap Server 9.3 already installed, ArcGIS 9.3 products will default to the ArcIMS installation location.
