Overview

ArcGIS Server consists of a GIS Server and an Application Developer Framework (ADF) for .NET and Java. The Server Object Manager (SOM) and Server Object Container (SOC) are the basic elements to the GIS Server. The ADFs provide the framework to build and deploy Web applications and Web services that make use of ArcObjects running in the GIS server.

The Server Object Manager (SOM), Server Object Container (SOC), and Application Developer Framework (ADF) for .NET can be installed using this ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework setup program. The SOM, SOC, and ADF for Java can be installed using the ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform setup program.

What's included with the ArcGIS Server 9.3 Media Kit?

The following are included with the ArcGIS Server Media Kit:

ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework components

ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework is made up of:

The GIS Server

Web Applications

Web Application Developer Framework

Mobile Application Developer Framework

Each component is described in the following paragraphs.

See the ArcGIS Server help for more information on ArcGIS Server components.

The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF Runtime

The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF Runtime is also available as an additional setup program on the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework media. This installs a collection of .NET assemblies containing Web controls and associated classes. It also installs .NET interop assemblies for working with COM object libraries on the ArcGIS Server machine. The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF Runtime includes the components for running applications that connect to a GIS Server. The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF Runtime should be distributed to users running applications developed with the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF.

The GIS Server Components

The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework media installs the GIS Server components, the Server Object Manager and the Server Object Container.

Server Object Manager

The Server Object Manager (SOM) is a Windows service running on a single machine. The SOM manages the set of server objects that are distributed across one or more SOC machines.

For information on the Server Object Manager system requirements see Step 1: Verify system requirements.

Server Object Container

The Server Object Container (SOC) can be installed on one or more Windows machines. These SOC machines host the server objects that are managed by the SOM. Each SOC machine is capable of hosting multiple container processes. A container process is a process in which one or more server objects is running. Container processes are administered by the SOM.

For information on the Server Object Container system requirements see Step 1: Verify system requirements.

Other ArcGIS Server components

The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework setup also includes additional ArcGIS Server components.

Web Application Developer Framework

The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework Web ADF facilitates the development of ArcGIS Server applications. The Web ADF includes Web controls, Web templates, samples, sample data, documentation, and help.

The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF Runtime

This feature installs a collection of .NET assemblies containing Web controls and associated classes that can be used to create ArcGIS Server applications. It also installs .NET interop assemblies for working with COM object libraries on the ArcGIS Server machine. The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF Runtime includes the components necessary for running applications that connect to a GIS Server. The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF Runtime should be installed on the Web server machine that deploys the developed application.

The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework SDK

The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework SDK is for developers who want to build Web applications and Web services with .NET. It is recommended that you install the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF Software Developer Kit feature on the machine where your Web applications will be developed. The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF includes:

ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF requires a Web server. For more information on ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF system requirements, visit http://support.esri.com and select Software > ArcGIS Server > System Requirements.

Visual Studio 2005/2008

Integration of the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework Web ADF with Visual Studio .NET. Visual Studio .NET Integration adds ESRI Web controls, ArcGIS Server Project Templates and makes the ADF help available in Visual Studio .NET.

Mobile Application Developer Framework

The Mobile ADF facilitates the development of mobile Web client applications that can operate in a partially-connected network environment. Mobile ADF applications can run on Windows desktops or tablet devices, as well as mobile hand-held devices running .NET Mobile Framework. The Mobile ADF does not have a runtime, but it does require that the appropriate .dlls be installed on the client device along with the developed application.

See the ArcGIS Server help for more information on ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF components.

Web Applications

The Web Applications allows you to administer your GIS Server.  The Web Applications feature installs components on the Web server and includes Manager, the application for administering your GIS server, building Web mapping applications, and managing ArcGIS Explorer maps. Through it, you can publish maps, globes and other GIS resources, publish and manage ArcGIS Explorer maps, and create Web applications.

The Web Applications feature of the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework setup, requires Microsoft IIS. For more information on ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework system requirements, visit http://support.esri.com and select Software > ArcGIS Server > System Requirements.

See the ArcGIS Server help for more information on the Web Applications feature.
