Troubleshooting ArcGIS Server installation

The following troubleshooting tips can help answer some common installing and configuring ArcGIS Server questions. For additional help, see the ESRI Knowledge Base at http://support.esri.com.

Are setup log files created?

Yes. Setup log files are generated in the root user's home directory. The two setup log files generated during installation are ArcGISServer_InstallLog.log and ArcGISServer_InstalledFeatures.log.

How do I start/stop/restart ArcGIS Server?

After a successful installation, the ArcGIS Server processes should be running. To stop all SOM and/or SOC processes, run <ArcGIS Server Install Location>/scripts/stopserver as the ArcGIS Server user. To start ArcGIS Server, run <ArcGIS Server Install Location>/scripts/startserver as the ArcGIS Server user. ArcGIS Server will also start automatically when the machine is rebooted.

NoteNote:

When stopping and immediately restarting ArcGIS Server, allow 25–30 seconds after stopping the server before running the startserver script. This will ensure that all the processes are properly shut down before restarting.

How do I connect to ArcGIS Server Manager?

Once the installation has completed successfully, you will be able to access ArcGIS Server Manager from Firefox or any supported Web browser by navigating to http://<SOM machine name>:8099. To access Manager for the first time, log in with the user name admin and the password admin. See the ArcGIS Server Manager documentation and help for more information.

I can't connect to the GIS Server from ArcCatalog.

Make sure that you are logged on to your machine as (and are running ArcCatalog as) a user account that has been added to the ArcGIS Server Manager. Note: You can use the run as command to start ArcCatalog as a different user than the user you are logged onto your machine as.

In ArcCatalog, I added my ArcGIS Server but I don't have the option to Add Server Object.

If the option to Add Server Object is unavailable, make sure the user you are logged on to your machine as (and are therefore opening ArcCatalog as) is a user that has been added to the ArcGIS Server Manager.

I received the following error message when adding a server object:

"GxAGSU. Machine <machine name> is not a valid server container. Error: (-8013) AL_SYSGEN_DIRECTORY_DOES_NOT_EXIST"

This error message means that you are not authorized to use ArcGIS Server. Each container machine must be registered for use with a valid authorization file. Obtain an authorization file from ESRI Customer Service and complete the authorization of ArcGIS Server. Authorization of ArcGIS Server can be performed in the initial setup or at a later time by launching the authorization script from <ArcGIS Server installation location>/scripts/authorizeSoftware.

I have added a MapServer, but when I preview it using ArcCatalog, the preview is blank.

This may be a data access error or an output error. Check the log file to verify that there are no errors indicating that the layers in the map are invalid. If the layers in the map are invalid, then verify that the container account has access to the data that the layers are referencing.

If there are no invalid layers in the log file, this may indicate that the output directory you specified for your MapServer has an invalid virtual directory. To verify that this is the case, change the output directory to None and preview the MapServer again.

For more information on accessing and reading log files, consult Appendix B, Configuration and Log Files in the ArcGIS Server Administrator and Developer Guide.

When trying to start the Server Object Service, it fails with a login error.

Using your operating system tools, check the Server and Container accounts to verify that their passwords have not expired. If the passwords have expired, or it's indicated that their passwords need to be changed, check the password never expires option.

Now that I have installed the GIS Server, where are the ADF components?

For Solaris and Linux, the ADF components for Java are features available to install from the same setup program you used to install the GIS Server. The ADF for .NET is included on the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework, and is only available on Windows. These setups are included in your ArcGIS Server media kit.
