GIS Server post installation overview

You must complete the GIS Server post installation to successfully configure ArcGIS Server for use.

Complete the post installation setup during the initial installation, or you can run the post installation setup at a later time from Start > Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework > GIS Server Post Install.

There are two GIS Server post installation setup options: Configure GIS Server and Authorize GIS Server. The features that you choose to install will determine what post installation options are available. If you installed the server object container, both post installation options must be successfully completed.

NoteNote:

If you need to configure a proxy server, select Show advanced configuration options before proceeding with GIS Server Post Install.

The following is an overview of the post installation setup options available.

Configure GIS Server

The Configure GIS Server option will set up the GIS server accounts. You will be prompted to specify both the SOM and SOC accounts and passwords.

The SOM account runs the server object manager service and process. This process manages the container processes on the container machines as well as the ArcGIS Server configuration and log files.

The SOC account is the account that the container processes hosting your server objects will run as. Container processes are started by the server object manager but are run as the SOC account.

If the SOM and SOC accounts specified do not already exist, the post installation setup will create them for you.

The SOM account and SOC accounts can be local or domain accounts. It is recommended you use local accounts. If the local accounts do not exist, the postinstallation setup will create them for you. If you specify domain accounts, these accounts must already exist.

The SOM and SOC accounts you specify must be the same on the machine on which you install the server object manager and the machine or machines on which you install the server object container. To ensure these are the same across machines, the first time you run the post installation setup, you can save the account information to a configuration file, which can be used to specify the account information when you run the post installation setup on other machines.

The post installation setup will grant the SOM account privileges to write to the locations where the ArcGIS Server configuration information and log files are stored. Privileges to start container processes on the ArcGIS Container machines will also be granted to the SOM account.

The post installation setup will grant the SOC account privileges to write to the system TEMP directory and the ability to launch container processes.

The post installation setup will also create two new user groups: agsusers and agsadmin. GIS server security is based on authenticating operating system user accounts. Connections will be granted to the GIS Server for those users who are members of the agsusers group. Administrative privileges to the GIS Server will be granted to members of the agsadmin group. See Configure GIS Server for additional information.

If you require a proxy server to connect to the Internet and you want to create map servers that contain layers that require an Internet connection (such as ArcIMS image layers or ArcGIS Server MapServer layers based on a MapServer Web service), the post installation setup will allow you to specify your proxy server information.

Authorize GIS Server

The Authorize GIS Server option authorizes the GIS Server for use. Machines on which you install the server object container require a software authorization file to be able to run container processes. To authorize your software, during the post installation setup you will be required to browse to the location of your authorization file that you received from ESRI Customer Service. Follow the instructions on your screen to authorize ArcGIS Server for use. See Authorize GIS Server for additional information.
