Overview

ArcGIS Server consists of two primary entities, a GIS server and an Application Developer Framework (ADF). ArcGIS Server Manager and Web Services are available to create and manage GIS services and Web applications. The GIS server consists of a server object manager (SOM) and server object container (SOC). The ADF provides the framework to build Web applications and Web services that make use of ArcObjects running in the GIS server. The GIS server and the ADF are available for .NET and Java developers. This guide provides instructions for the installation of all components of the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework.

The server object manager, server object container, and ADF for .NET can be installed using this ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework setup program. The SOM, SOC, and ADF for Java can be installed using the ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform setup program.

ArcGIS Server 10 for the Microsoft .NET Framework has been separated into two setups: ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services and ArcGIS Server 10 - Web Applications.

ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services components

ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services is made up of the following:

GIS Server

The ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework media installs two GIS server components: the server object manager and the server object container. Select the ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services setup option to install these components.

  • The SOM is a Windows service running on a single machine. The SOM manages the set of server objects that are distributed across one or more SOC machines.
  • The SOC can be installed on one or more Windows machines. These SOC machines host the server objects that are managed by the SOM. Each SOC machine is capable of hosting multiple container processes. A container process is a process in which one or more server objects are running. Container processes are administered by the SOM.

Services Manager

The Services Manager component manages GIS services and can be installed on the same machine as the GIS server or on a separate machine. Services Manager requires Internet Information Services.

Web Services (SOAP, REST)

This component provides SOAP and REST endpoints, through which GIS services can be accessed. Web Services (SOAP, REST) requires Internet Information Services.

See the ArcGIS Server Help for more information on ArcGIS Server components.

ArcGIS Server 10 - Web Applications components

ArcGIS Server 10 - Web Applications is made up of the following:

Applications Manager

The Applications Manager component allows you to create and manage Web applications and can be installed on the same machine as the GIS server or on a separate machine. Applications Manager requires Internet Information Services.

Web Applications Developer Framework

The Web ADF facilitates the development of Web applications. It includes Web Controls, templates, samples, and documentation.

  • Software Developer Kit
    • Visual Studio 2008 Integration: Integration of the Web ADF with Visual Studio 2008. Visual Studio 2008 integration adds ESRI Web Controls and Web Mapping Application (WMA) templates and makes the ADF help available in Visual Studio 2008.
    • Visual Studio 2010 Integration: Integration of the Web ADF with Visual Studio 2010. Visual Studio 2010 integration adds ESRI Web Controls and Web Mapping Application (WMA) templates.

ArcGIS Web API Shortcuts

The latest versions of the ArcGIS Web APIs are available online from the ArcGIS Resource Center. DVD copies can be requested by contacting ESRI Customer Service.

  • Microsoft Silverlight/WPF
  • Flex
  • JavaScript
  • Mobile
  • ESRI Mapping Parts for Microsoft SharePoint

Data Interoperability Extension

The Data Interoperability Extension is now a separate setup program, available for installation from the ArcGIS Server media front end. Insert the ArcGIS GIS Server media and choose Data Interoperability Extension.

ArcGIS Server 10 - Web ADF Runtime

The ArcGIS Server 10 - Web ADF Runtime setup is available as a separate setup program on the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework media. This installs a collection of .NET assemblies containing Web controls and associated classes. It also installs .NET interoperability assemblies for working with COM object libraries on the ArcGIS Server machine. The ArcGIS Server 10 - Web ADF Runtime includes the components for running applications that connect to a GIS server. The ArcGIS Server 10 - Web ADF Runtime should be distributed to users running applications developed with the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework ADF.
