Step 1: Verify system requirements
The system specifications, including hardware requirements, supported operating systems, and Web servers, that are required to run ArcGIS Server 10 for the Java Platform on Windows are available at ArcGIS Server 10 System Requirements.
Supported operating system
See ArcGIS Server 10 System Requirements for the latest supported operating systems.
The operating systems below satisfy the minimum operating system requirements:
- Windows 2003 Service Pack 2 Server Standard, Enterprise & Datacenter (32-bit and 64-bit (EM64T))
- Windows 2008 Server Standard, Enterprise & Datacenter (32-bit and 64-bit (EM64T)).
- Windows 2008 R2 Server Standard, Enterprise & Datacenter (64-bit (EM64T))
- Windows 7 Ultimate, Professional Edition (32-bit and 64-bit (EM64T))
- Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Ultimate, Enterprise, Business (32-bit and 64-bit (EM64T)

Required disk space
The following disk space is required to install ArcGIS Server 10 for the Java Platform:
Disk space requirements | |
---|---|
Complete installation |
2000 MB 275 MB of this disk space will be required on your system drive. |
Python
Python 2.6.X and Numerical Python 1.3.0 are required to support certain core geoprocessing tools. It is recommended that Python 2.6.5 and Numerical Python 1.3.0 are installed by the ArcGIS Server setup. Users can choose to not install Python 2.6.5 and Numerical Python 1.3.0 by unselecting the Python feature during installation. The Python feature is a subfeature of the server object container (SOC). If Python 2.6.5 and Numerical Python 1.3.0 are installed by an ArcGIS setup, the last ArcGIS product uninstalled will also uninstall Python 2.6.5 and Numerical Python 1.3.0.
Internet Explorer 7.0 or higher required
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7.0 or higher is required. You must obtain and install Internet Explorer version 6.0 or higher prior to installing ArcGIS Server 10 for the Java Platform.
Support for 64-bit processors
ArcGIS Server 9.2 and higher is supported on the Intel and AMD 64-bit processor families. ArcGIS Server is a native 32-bit application. It is certified to run as a 32-bit application on 64-bit (x64) Microsoft Windows. Web server support is based on the Web server vendor's support of 64-bit Microsoft Windows. Confirm Web server support of 64-bit Windows with the Web server vendor.
Additional Software and Development Requirements
An OpenGL 1.3 (or higher)-compliant video card is required, with at least 32 MB of video memory. However, 64 MB of video memory or higher is recommended.
ArcGIS Authorization file
Each ArcGIS SOC machine requires an authorization file. See To obtain an authorization file for more information. Each new version of ArcGIS SOC requires a new authorization file.
Interaction between ArcGIS Server 10 for the Java Platform and ArcGIS products previous to 10
If the following products are installed on your machine and are a version previous to 10, they must be uninstalled before proceeding with the ArcGIS Server 10 for the Java Platform setup:
- ArcGIS Desktop
- ArcInfo Workstation
- ArcReader standalone
- ArcIMS
- ArcIMS Web ADF for the Java Platform
- ArcIMS Web ADF for the .NET Framework
- ArcGIS Server
- ArcGIS Server for the Java Platform
- ArcGIS Server for the .NET Framework
- ArcGIS Server Web ADF Runtime for the .NET Framework
- ArcGIS Engine Runtime
- ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit
- ArcGIS Desktop Developer Kit
- ArcGIS Image Server (and all clients)
The ArcGIS Server 10 for the Java Platform setup will display a dialog box if conflicting versions of these products exist on your machine. If so, you must uninstall these products, then run the ArcGIS Server 10 for the Java Platform setup again to proceed with your installation.
These products, if they are all version 10, can exist together on the same machine.
