Creating globe cache tiles

You can use ArcCatalog or the Catalog window to create caches for all the layers in your globe service. The Caching tab of the Service Properties dialog box allows you to see cache information and access the cache generation tools. Alternatively, you can access the caching tools by expanding the Toolboxes folder in ArcCatalog, from the Catalog window, or by conducting a search under the Geoprocessing menu.

On Linux/Solaris, you can create/update the cache from the command line. You can set the properties following the directions as the script guides you through the cache generation/updating process.

Following are the steps for creating globe cache tiles:

Steps:
  1. In ArcCatalog or the Catalog window, create an administrative connection to the server that contains the globe service and ensure that the globe service is started.
  2. Right-click the globe service and click Service Properties.
  3. Click the Caching tab. See Available globe cache properties to learn more about the properties on this tab.
  4. If this is your first time creating tiles for the cache, set the properties you want and click Apply. A message appears asking if you want to create tiles now. Click Yes.
  5. If this is not your first time creating tiles for the cache, click the Update Tiles button.
  6. At this point, the Manage Globe Server Cache Tiles geoprocessing tool is visible. Use this tool to create globe cache tiles.
  7. You'll notice that the Host, GlobeServer Object, and Server Cache Directory parameters are already populated. When you open the tool from the Caching tab, it's recommended that you do not change these values.
  8. Choose the appropriate level of detail for each layer using the From and To combo boxes. The From value should correspond to the lowest level of detail and the To value to the highest level of detail you want to use in the layer's data cache.
    NoteNote:

    You cannot change the From and To values for elevation layers and features as vectors. Elevation caches need to be built at all levels, and the tool automatically calculates the highest and lowest levels of detail. Features as vectors have a single level of detail. Hence, their From and To levels of detail are set to the same values. If you want to change the level at which a feature layer should be cached, do so by changing the feature level of detail property from the source ArcGlobe document. After changing this property, you'll need to restart your service so the change is picked up by your globe service.

  9. Example of how level of detail appears for 3D vectors, draped rasters, and elevation rasters.
  10. Optionally, specify the number of service instances to use. By default, the tool uses all available instances.
  11. Click OK to close the dialog box and start the caching. The geoprocessing status bar indicates when the data cache generation is complete. The service automatically restarts, and clients begin using the cache immediately.

Use the Manage Globe Server Cache Tiles and Delete Globe Server Cache geoprocessing tools to update an existing data cache and delete the data tiles of an already existing cache. Deleting tiles is a nonreversible process, so use caution when running this tool.
