Upgrading from SQL Server 2005 Express to SQL Server 2008 Express

This topic applies to ArcEditor and ArcInfo only.

Upgrade a SQL Server 2005 Express instance with Advanced Services to a SQL Server 2008 Express instance with Advanced Services using the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express installation wizard.

The version of SQL Server Express that is delivered with ArcGIS has changed with each release. The following lists the version of SQL Server Express that is delivered with each version of ArcGIS:

• ArcGIS 9.2: SQL Server 2005 Express Service Pack (SP) 2
• ArcGIS 9.3: SQL Server 2005 Express with Advanced Services
• ArcGIS 9.3.1 and 10: SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services

If you were using database servers with an earlier release of ArcGIS, you can upgrade your SQL Server Express instance when you install ArcGIS 9.3 or later releases.

Steps:

1. Before upgrading the SQL Server Express instance, create backups of all your geodatabases.
2. Be sure to install the applications that SQL Server 2008 requires: Microsoft Windows Installer 4.5, the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, and Windows Powershell 1.0 or 2.0. These can be obtained from the Microsoft Web site.
3. Once the prerequisite software is installed and the computer has been restarted, navigate to the ArcSDE Personal or ArcSDE Workgroup folder of the installation media and launch the ESRI.exe file.
4. When the installation dialog box appears, click ArcSDE for SQL Server Express.
5. Leave the Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition option checked on the Installation Options dialog box. If you are using ArcGIS Server at the Workgroup level and have a new license, leave the postinstallation option checked. If not, uncheck the postinstallation option and click Install.
6. Click Installation on the left pane of the SQL Server Installation Center dialog box and click Upgrade from SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005.
   
   Tip:

   If you also need to update the ArcGIS Server Workgroup license, see Changing license keys for database servers and their geodatabases.
7. The setup checks your computer to make sure it meets the minimum system requirements necessary to install SQL Server 2008 Express. When it is finished, click OK.
8. Install the setup support files. If you do not have the required files, the setup will stop. If your computer has all the required files, it will pass the check. Click Next to proceed.
9. You are installing the Express edition, so be sure the option Specify a free edition is chosen on the Product Key dialog box, then click Next.
10. Read and accept the Microsoft license agreement and click Next.
    Note:

    If you do not accept, the installation will terminate.

11. Select the instance of SQL Server Express to upgrade from the Instance to upgrade drop-down menu, then click Next.
    
12. The wizard detects the features that are currently installed with the SQL Server Express instance. You can only upgrade features that are already present; you cannot add new ones. Click Next to continue.
    Caution:

    If you are upgrading from SQL Server 2005 Express SP2, you must run the SQL Server 2008 Express installation again after upgrading and add the full-text component.

13. Click Next on the Instance Configuration dialog box.
14. Review the information on the Disk Space Requirements dialog box. This indicates how much disk space the upgraded instance will use. Click Next to proceed.
15. Specify an account to run the full-text service.

    This should be a nonadministrator account.

16. Choose to Rebuild full-text catalogs.
    

    This means your existing full-text catalogs will be rebuilt using the SQL Server 2008 word breakers.

17. If you want to notify Microsoft of your feature usage information for SQL Server Express, check one of the boxes on the Error and Usage Reporting dialog box. Otherwise, leave the boxes unchecked and click Next.
18. When the check of the upgrade rules completes, click Next to continue.
19. Review the upgrade summary. If all the information is correct, click Upgrade. If any of the information is incorrect, click Back to step backward in the wizard and correct the information.
20. When the upgrade completes, click Next.
21. The final dialog box indicates whether the upgrade was successful. Click Close to exit the upgrade wizard.
