Adding ArcGIS Server map services

Within your organization, you can publish maps as map services for use in Desktop, Web, and now Mobile applications. Those map services can be used as basemaps within your mobile projects. Your corporate land basemaps or the aerial photography that you have acquired can provide reference to the fieldwork that needs to be accomplished as well.

Using a map service from the field requires not only that your field workforce use devices that can establish connectivity with the Internet but also that your map services are accessible to the field-workers, either by using VPN software on the field device or by establishing a Web Server external to your corporate firewall that can be accessed from the field.

If you cannot ensure field connectivity, you can still leverage your map services as local basemap content. If you create a cached map service, the cache that is created on your Web server can be used as a local data source in your mobile project. See Adding Cached Maps for more information.

To use map services, you must enter the name and instance of your GIS server. If the services are secured, you also need to enter a user name and password to connect and list map services. The connection to your GIS Server is saved within the settings of the Mobile Project Center. You can optionally save the user name and password information as well.

NoteNote:

Basemap content that you add to a project defines the spatial reference of your field map. Both the operational map layers and the basemap layers that are in your field map must have the same spatial reference.

Steps:
  1. With a project already open, click Add to open the Add Layer dialog box.
  2. Select ArcGIS Server Map Service from the left column of the Add Layer dialog box.
  3. Within the drop-down list, enter the name and instance of the Web server that is hosting map services you would like to choose from, then press the ENTER key or the refresh button. The connection information will be saved within the settings of the mobile project center so that you do not need to add it again.
