Adding street maps

You can provision your field crew's devices with street map data from Esri StreetMap Premium for disconnected (local to the device) work in the field. Esri StreetMap Premium, a vector-based data product licensed for use wtih ArcGIS Mobile, includes datasets for North America and Europe, along with an application that you can use to clip the datasets to fit the extent of your work area to reduce space used on the device.

Whether you plan to use the entire extent of the data product or a region of interest for your area, you need to copy the dataset to a location on your internal network that the Mobile Project Center can access in order for you to add the dataset as a basemap layer in your project.

Esri StreetMap Premium datasets are collections of files that define layers within the basemap and an .xml file with an extension of .navmap that defines the structure of the basemap. Within the Mobile Project Center, you need browse access to the Esri StreetMap Premium dataset to add it to your mobile project. The root folder name (the folder that contains the .navmap file) is the folder that you need to choose when adding the Esri StreetMap Premium dataset to your project.

When provisioning devices, you must manually copy the basemap to your mobile device after creating your project. The Mobile Project Center only provides the reference information inside the project file. It is up to you to deploy the basemap dataset to the device prior to using the project. If you do not deploy the street map dataset, the project will still open but will not display your street map dataset. The ArcGIS Mobile application looks for a folder matching the name of the folder specified in the project. Only the folder name is important (not the path).

NoteNote:

ArcGIS Mobile looks for basemaps inside a specific folder location. If you are using the ArcGIS Mobile application on a Windows Mobile device, that folder location is \My Documents\ArcGIS Mobile\ (either in the main memory or your storage card). If you are using ArcGIS Mobile on a Windows tablet device, the location is at the root level directory for your mobile projects (refer to the settings page in the ArcGIS Mobile application for the actual location, as you can set additional basemap storage paths). Copy the Esri StreetMap Premium dataset to the projects root folder location. You can then use the basemap across different field projects.

Steps:
  1. With a project already open, click Add to open the Add Map Layers dialog box.
  2. Select Street Map from the Add Base Map Layer choice list on the left panel of the dialog box and then navigate to the folder location where your streetmap dataset is located. The folder should contain a .navmap file. The .navmap file is the map file for the Esri StreetMap Premium dataset.
  3. Click the Add button.

A reference to the Esri StreetMap Premium dataset is added to your project.

  4. Once you are finished creating your project, provision the project and street map to the device before using.
