Use secured services

When opening a map that contains secure services, you are prompted for credentials (user name and password) to get access to that service. If you don't have or provide valid credentials that grant access, the map loads without the secure layer.

NoteNote:

ArcGIS Server token-secured services and secure hosted services published as part of an account in ArcGIS Online for organizations are both supported. ArcGIS Server services secured with Windows authentication are not supported.

Using ArcGIS Server token-secured services

Maps containing ArcGIS Server token-secured services prompt the user to connect to the service if they haven't already connected to that server. If no or invalid credentials are provided, the map loads without that layer. These credentials are stored for the lifetime of the application: if you close the app, then reopen and return to a map with a secure service, you will be prompted for the credentials again.

To load a map and view an included ArcGIS Server token-secured service, take the following steps:

Steps:
  1. Open a map containing an ArcGIS Server token-secured service.
  2. As the map loads, you will be prompted for credentials for the secure service.
Screen shot of the authentication prompt.
  3. Provide your user name and password and tap submit to load the service in the map. Tap cancel to skip this service. Check the Don't ask me again check box if you do not want to be prompted for credentials on this server again during this run of the application. Otherwise, if your credentials are invalid, you will be given three chances to provide valid credentials.
  4. If your credentials were not provided or were invalid, you see a message that the secure ArcGIS Server service layer could not be loaded.
Screen shot of unavailable layers message.

Using hosted secured services

Secure hosted services prompt the user to log into the app if they haven't already. If a user has no access to a secure hosted service, the map loads without that layer. To load a map and view an included secure hosted service, take the following steps:

NoteNote:

Like the experience when connected to an online geographic information system (GIS) in the browser, you can only view the hosted services accessible by the single signed in user. To view services accessible by a different user or member of a different organization, sign out of the app and sign in as that other user.

Steps:
  1. Open a map containing a secure hosted service.

If you are already logged into the app, the map opens. If your logged in user has access to the secure hosted service, it displays. Otherwise, it will be left out of the map.

  2. If you are not logged into the app, as the map loads, you will be prompted to log in.
Screen shot of the sign-in page.
    NoteNote:

On the sign-in page, you will see the uniform resource locator (URL) of the online GIS to which you are connected, and the user name and password you provide must have access to that online GIS. If connected to the default ArcGIS Online (ArcGIS.com) online GIS, you can also sign in with a user name and password belonging to an organization. If you sign in as a user who does not have access to the hosted service, you will not see the service in your map.

  3. Provide your user name and password and tap sign in to load the service in the map. Press the Back button to cancel and skip this service. Check the Remember me? check box if you want the app to remember these credentials for future runs of the application.
  4. If your credentials were not provided or were invalid, you see a message that the secure hosted layer could not be loaded.
Screen shot of unavailable layers message.
