Getting started

ArcGIS mobile framework for Windows Mobile allows developers to extend the out-of-box application by modifying existing functionality or introducing new business logic.

If you are new to the out-of-box mobile application, getting yourself familiar with it will help you better understand the application framework, as the application itself is built on top of application framework. It's important to learn the basics of the application, especially its task-centric, workflow-driven design throughout the application. To get started with the framework, see Overview of application framework. It gives you an overview of the framework architecture and addresses some important key concepts. You can also take a quick look at the Summary diagram.

Before you can get hands-on experience when using the application or following the tutorials in the help, you need to configure your development machine. The information is available in Setting up the development environment.

There are two walk-throughs available for you to easily get started. They both come with detailed, step-by-step instructions that you can easily follow to create your first task or project extension. By finishing these walk-throughs, you will get a basic idea of what is involved in developing extensions or tasks with the application framework.

ArcGIS Mobile also ships project templates and item templates that you can leverage in Visual Studio IDE. They will be installed by the ArcGIS Mobile setup and integrated seamlessly with Visual Studio. We suggest you use these project templates because they will automatically create the necessary files for you just like using any other Visual Studio templates. It will also create a matching Mobile Project Center project that will be consumed by Mobile Project Center when you author a mobile project.

For the most updated information, see ArcGIS Mobile Resource Center.
