Use the Navigator
Shown at the bottom left of the map, the Navigator provides various ways to move around the map and control your viewing position; in addition, it indicates the compass orientation of the map. The Navigator is deactivated initially, showing only a north arrow, as shown in the image, below left. You can activate the Navigator by moving the mouse cursor directly over it; once activated, Navigator will appear as below right, showing controls for map navigation.
Here are the parts of the Navigator and the actions you can perform using them:
- Click the + button to zoom in, click the - button to zoom out, or drag the slider bar to zoom in or out.
- Click the arrows to move North, South, East or West.
- Click the Show Coordinates button to show or hide the coordinate display, or click the Full Extent button to display the full extent of the map.
Explorer Online wraps the map across the international dateline so you can pan continuously across the world.
The coordinate display appears at the bottom of the map, showing the location of the mouse on the map. It displays latitude and longitude, or x and y coordinates in the map's coordinate system. It also displays a scale bar. The coordinate display remains visible and does not dim as you move over the map. To hide the coordinate display, click the Show Coordinates button again.
If you activate the Navigator when the left side panel is open, the Navigator will appear over the top of the panel. Move the mouse away from the Navigator to deactivate it and use the side panel.
You can also use the keyboard or the mouse to navigate, depending on your preferences.
