Selecting events by proximity

You can use the proximity selection tools available in the Roadway Characteristics Editor to select events in then map on the basis of their nearness to a given feature. The selection tools are:

Proximity Tool

Function

Along route path

Selects events intersecting a route on either side of a point selected on the route.

Buffer from location

Selects events intersecting a buffer from a point location selected on the map.

Buffer from route

Selects events intersecting a buffer created on a route segment.

One way you can select events is by proximity.

Steps:
  1. Open a web browser and navigate to the Roadway Characteristics Editor.
  2. Click Select > Select Events by Proximity.

Selecting events along route path

You can select events using their proximity from a particular point along a route using this tool. For example, if there is an error in data at a point on the route and you want to find the events along the route that might be affected by that erroneous point.

Selecting events along route path

Steps:
  1. Choose the event layer for which you wish to select events from.
  2. Choose a selection method.
  3. Selection Type

    Function

    Create a new selection

    Creates a new selection set.

    Append to results

Adds the currently selected features to the previously created selection set.

    Remove from results

Removes the currently selected features from the previously created selection set.

  4. Click the Type drop-down arrow and choose Along route path.
  5. Click the Network (LRM) drop-down arrow and select the network (LRM) associated with the event.
  6. Type a route ID in the ROUTE_ID text box or use the Select a Route on the Map tool Select a Route on the Map to select a route on the map.
  7. Type a measure value from where the proximity of the events will be calculated in the Measure text box or use the Select From Measure on the Map tool Select From Measure on the Map to select a point location on the route.
  8. Type a proximity distance in the Distance text box.
  9. All the events within this distance on either side of the point that intersect the route will be selected. The proximity will be calculated in terms of the measure values along the route.
  10. Select the units for the proximity distance.
  11. Click Select.

All the events within 0.2 mile on either side of the point along the route will be selected. The results will be displayed in the form of a table.

Once the event records are selected, then you can navigate and edit them using the results grid. See Editing event records for more information.

Selecting events using a buffer from a location

You can select events using their proximity from a point location in the map using this tool. For example, you can check whether all the roads within a particular buffer distance from a school are designated to have a speed limit less than 25 miles per hour.

Selecting events using buffer from a location

Steps:
  1. Choose the event layer for which you want to select events from.
  2. Choose a selection method.
  3. Selection Type

    Function

    Create a new selection

    Creates a new selection set.

    Append to results

Adds the currently selected features to the previously created selection set.

    Remove from results

Removes the currently selected features from the previously created selection set.

  4. Click the Type drop-down arrow and choose Buffer from location.
  5. Type the geographic latitude and longitude values of a point location on the map in the Location text box.

The proximity will be calculated from this location. Alternatively, use the Select a Location on the Map tool Select a Location on the Map to select a point location on the map.

  6. Type a buffer distance in the Distance text box.

All the events that intersect this buffer distance will be selected.

  7. Select the buffer units.
  8. Click Select.

All the events that intersect a 0.2 mile buffer zone from the point location will be selected. The results will be displayed in the form of a table.

Once the event records are selected, then you can navigate and edit them using the results grid. See Editing event records for more information.

Selecting events using buffer from a route segment

You can select events using their proximity from a road segment in the map using the Buffer from Route tool.

Steps:
  1. Choose the event layer for which you wish to select events from.
  2. Choose a selection method.
  3. Selection Type

    Function

    Create a new selection

    Creates a new selection set.

    Append to results

Removes the currently selected features from the previously created selection set.

  4. Click the Type drop-down arrow and choose Buffer from route.
  5. Click the Network (LRM) drop-down arrow and select the network (LRM) associated with the event.
  6. Type a route ID in the ROUTE_ID text box or click the Select a Route on the Map tool Select a Route on the Map to select a route on the map.
  7. Type the From Measure of the route segment in the From Measure text box or use the Select From Measure on the Map tool Select From Measure on the Map to select the From Measure on the map. (Optional)

The From Measure will be shown by a green cross on the map.

  8. Type the To Measure of the route segment in the To Measure text box or use the Select From Measure on the Map tool Select From Measure on the Map to select the To Measure on the map. (Optional)

The To Measure will be shown by a red cross on the map.

  9. If you do not enter the From and To Measures, the complete route will be regarded as a road segment to calculate the proximity.
  10. Type a buffer distance in the Distance text box.
  11. All the events that intersect this buffer distance from the route segment will be selected.
  12. Select the buffer units.
  13. Click Select.

All the events that intersect a 0.2 mile buffer zone from the road segment will be selected. The results will be displayed in the form of a table.

Once the event records are selected, then you can navigate and edit them using the results grid. See Editing event records for more information.
